video capture problem in FCP HD

Wow, i'm so happy that this forum exists, this is my first post, I hope you all can help me out.
The problem started this afternoon. I was unable to get final cut 4 to recognize my DVX-100. This has happened before and I usually solve the problem by dis/reconnecting cables and experimenting with the plug in/boot up sequence. After trying all possible combinations and making sure my a/v settings were right on, i decided to make a run to get a new firewire cable, guessing that my old one was shot. That made no change. I ran software update on my g4 and installed the update for FCP HD. YAAAH! Now final cut is recognizing my camera, device control works without problems. Although, I soon found out that my problems were still here. The computer recognizes the camera, device control in FCP and iMovie works, but I am unable to get an image in either. When I try to capture now in FCP an error message tells me that it cant be done "as there is no video".
Please help me out on this one people, I am done with my frustrations but now just really sad. I hope my camera isn't busted. I guess that it is something in the camera's dv out settings because again I get no picture in either FCP or iMovie, but both device controls work. Is there an in camera setting that I am missing that will solve this i hope i hope?? Thanks,
Ian

Well the same thing actually happened to me a while ago. I didn't know what the problem was as I went through every setting I could imagine. So me, being the non-tech head that I am approached it from a caveman's perspective. I basically reinstalled Final Cut from the bottom up (which meant I had to do the HD upgrade online again too). After I did that, it has worked fine ever since. I don't know if that will solve your problem but since you tried everything else, couldn't hurt to try this.

I had the same problem and the repair center found out it wast he Firewire connection in the camera. They replaced it and then it worked fine again. So it could be the camera.
I also had another capture problem and i tried GCAM as capture tool. You can download it (only 54k, I remember). It writes quicktime files. This helps you figuring out if its your camera or your computer software.
Goodluck

We had that exact same problem earlier this year. It turned out to be a 10.39 issue. That version of OSX had some major Firewire issues with FCP - once we upgraded to Tiger (10.4), the problem was solved and the cameras could be seen.

Hope this helps.

Aaargh. This has happened to me a few times since upgrading to 10.3.9 as well...

Generally, indeed, re-plugging and re-starting firewire devices eventually solves it, but it's a pain....
