MichaelP:

Firstly, nice meeting you last month. Sorry I wasn't as tall as you expected though! ;)

My problem is this: Upon digitizing 24PA footage from Panny's MQ MiniDV tapes, I get this annoying stutter of video and audio. It happens here and there but enough so that it is an annoying problem. Avid often aborts recording because it is dropping frames. My captures end up being corrupted so that I can't really use the clips. I can't seem to digitize smoothly.

Strangely though, when I started importing my friend's PAL 25i Sony MiniDV tape, Avid seemed to function quite well and reliably. I only started losing frames after about 41 minutes of straight digitizing.

So, I'm wondering why my 24PA NTSC projects are giving me headaches? Could it be something as simple as the settings? My PCI card/Mojo arrangement? Panasonic tapes in a Sony deck? Something else?

Thanks,

-DC-

Are you capturing through the Mojo or directly? Try direct capture.
Does the problem occur on shorter clips?
Try setting the film/24p settings to be active for "pulldown cadence for 00:00:00:00 to be "A"

Let me know what happens. It was nice meeting you as well. I assumed you would be taller since your picture here shows you looking down - I thought you would tower over me! ;)

Michael:

Thanks for the response once again. I'm capturing through Mojo. I will try direct capturing if the film/24P settings don't clear it up. The length of the clips don't seem to matter, nor does crash recording versus MarkIns/MarkOuts - they all stutter under 24PA capture with Mojo. The ONLY exception has been with 25i PAL. I haven't tried 30i though.

I'll report back soon. And on stilts. ;)

Nope, there's a 5.1.5 which adds ... wait for it! Scroll Wheel support!!!! And the crowd goes wild.

Michael:

I went to go experiment with my Avid this weekend and realized I didn't have the appropriate cable to test direct capture. I'll grab one soon though.

Thanks,

Michael:

Ok, I tried out direct capture. It seemed to be working ok when suddenly I lost power to my deck for a second. Now when I try to capture directly, the system tells me that the OHCI port is busy and it cannot be used for capturing.

I've tried everything I could think of to make make this error message go away - from restarting Avid to rebooting my computer. Nothing seems to work. Maybe I should trash the settings but how exactly do I do this?

As soon as my system becomes stable again, I can further test direct capture.

Thanks,

What may be happening, as this has happened to myself previously, is that the buffers are getting over run. Try disabling confidence view. This worked for me. I capture 24PA and its golden. Except my pixelization in my captures, but I'm pretty sure that has to do with the recording format then anything.

Michael:

I was finally able to try a direct capture with only one device (DSR-11). It seemed more reliable but I still got a few glitches. I did NOT get that horrible "screeching" audio stutter though. I tried it again and this time I shut down my USB 2.0 Wireless Network Adapter and AVG AntiVirus protection. The results were even better. But I still get these dropped frames. Avid tells me that I can either Keep or Discard the partial clip.

So, I'm not sure what it is. This is the same problem I was having on my old computer (P4) before getting my dual-Xeon. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my PCI card arrangement in the slots? I emailed you (through 24P.com) a profile of my computer to see if anything jumps out at you.

I've been using the mobo firewire port as opposed to the Pyro card. Maybe I should get premium cables? Is there anything else that may be conflicting with the onboard firewire bus? In My Network window, I notice there are two 1394 connections enabled. I'm not sure what they are for but should they be disabled?

Thanks,

-DC-
