viability of the 100A/B

As many of you know I just acquired my first 100A last year at this time.

I am looking to acquire another camera, and my budget only would allow for another 100A/B

But I am thinking about the viability of the 100A/B. Are they still being used in SERIOUS numbers still? Are many of you here still using them for the DVXFests?

I ask this because I do wedding video, and many people are moving to HD, or getting the DSLRs that can do HD. (I also do photography)

The only thing I see in the difference in HD Video is that ites just as dark in some in churches and venue as what an SD 24p camera such as the 100A/B would be... it's just "High Def Darkness."

So instead of getting shillacked on some other board, I jsut thought I would ask my fellow DVX'ers.

I would love to go up to an HMC-150, but the budget just doesn't allow it right now.

Thanks in advance!

I still like my DVX100b. They are still holding their value too. B &H still selling them for $2500. The work flow is easy. It is easy to use. Still takes great video. If you wanted a used one there are some really good prices for those DVXs.

well if u need 2 cams then the dvx is the choice i'd go. underexposure is underexposure be it HD or SD...the camera needs light. If you can survive on one camera then sell the current dvx and add that to ur other funds to get the hmc. But then with the HMC comes a possible upgrade in ur PC depending on what ur working with currenmtly . However u can get the other DVX, do a couple weddings and save that $ for an hmc THEN sell one of ur DVX's and buy the hmc with the additional $$. Now you have a dvx and an HMC :) Then u can use the DVX for wides for ur weddings (uprezzed with instant HD) and intercut that with Mediums and close ups on the hmc. Best of both worlds...u have ur dvx and ur hmc. phew....that was a mouthful :)

I'm goin to upgrade to hmc hopefully by jan-feb. but i wont be selling my dvx. I will still need it for alot of things...and i'll use HD for some other things. It'll be good to have the choice for me, cuz i;m still in SD world.

That being said the dvx still rocks

For many, the DVX is still a great camera that does its job. My opinion is that it is fine for weddings, but it all depends on whether your clients are willing to consider SD. Some people are simply convinced that since HD is newer, it must always be much better.

Or just get the other DVX and get instant HD for $100.00. It'll still be put to dvd. But i dunno how much better instand HD makes it look. never used it but heard good things

here"s an example of DVX footage uprezzed with instand HD...shout out to steven...sick stuff!!

I dunno.

Maybe I was just getting a little discourage with all my "colleagues" go up to HD and just spooging over the Canon 5D/7D.

I have only been asked 1 time for HD.

But I said before, HD dark footaage is still dark footage.

I sometimes get reamed on "other boards" becuase I have the "audacity" to use external lighting while on a wedding shoot. It's like I can't get through to them that lights in a church or venue were designed for the human eye, not the lens of a camera.

It's not like I am setting up an entire studio lighting setup in the church, but I do tell my clients that "you cannot make bricks without straw, and you cannot make images without light"

If news studios such as MSNBC, FOX, etc have to use 5000W lights (exaggeration) with their $1 Million cameras, what are we to expect from our little - although powerful - DVX's as well as other pro-sumer cameras?

I guess I needed to come to the "Oasis of DVX users" to get a little recharging.

I'll probably stick to the DVX's (A/B) and eventually move up to a HMC in a year or so.

lol...the Oasis of dvx users...i like that one. screw em...if u put out good work then thats all that matters. As u;ve said, you only been asked once for HD so ur good for now. when alot start asking for Hd then i guess its time to step it up. And screw em again about the lights...ur dvx well lit will kill dark HD footage.

Well.. the other issue is that weddings are unscripted, and I can't stand recreating things for events that are supposed to be impromtu when it comes to emotions and such.

Here's a couple of shots from a wedding I did, where I had external lights UP FRONT in the church:

Less than 10-15 ft later, and stepping into the area where the lighting was:

These are pretty much righ off the camera... no color correction (obviously) This was shot in non 24p mode.

The lighting? 2 500W Utility lights with difussed glass in the far corners of the sanctuary, pointing towards the walls and ceilings to get a bounce effect as well as not blind people. Still got some harsh shadows though, but you can frigging SEE!

yeh def better... u can see less grainy and actually see. i'm sure after u crush the blacks to get those suits black it will look fine.

question. how do u guys do screengrabs? I want to post a screengrab from Premier but i'm not sure how to.

Thanks. I knew I wasn't nuts.

Screen Grabs in Premiere:
You export a frame. (I am assuming that you are wanting a frame from your video, and not the WHOLE screen)

Get to a frame on your sequence timeline that you want to export.

Go to File -----> Export -----> Frame.

I think it defaults to BMP. But you can chose TIFF, TARGA and GIF if you click on the Settings in the "Save As" window.

Bring it into Photoshop or what have you and save it as a JPEG.

Upload it to photobucket, flickr, your website and link it here.
