VG20 image and specs

November! Darn it. I was hoping to get this approx. late Sept. or sometime in October. I guess I'll use the extra time to build up a small collection of older manual lenses to use on the VG20.

LOL! Never satisfied. But this cam looks very good so far.

Well, count me as one for being satisfied. I don't really want to or need to be spending 5-6 grand on a camera right now. The fact that I can get something that does a lot of what the AF100 and FS100 do, but for less than half the price is really good news. Also for about a third of the price of an FS100 plus the same kit lens as the VG20 will have, I can buy a VG20 plus lens and an A65 with that Sony 16-50mm 2.8 lens.

I am pretty sure Sony did their homework with all their cams. Their reputation is on the line. The VG-10 was a pretty good camera the VG-20 will be much much better. With an S35 sensor to boot!

Does anyone know if the VG20's HDMI out is 10-bit or only 8-bit? I suppose that 10-bit would be asking too much. Still, that would be nice. Also, if the VG20 supports RAW in stills mode, would there be any way to get RAW in video mode? It would be interesting to somehow integrate CineForm RAW.

I agree. I would not be the guinea pig on any of the new sony releases.

Well...I´ll volunteer ! And I´ll take one of each.....with ice cream ! But it does appear to me, even though I think the Nex-7 is absolutely beautiful, the Nex-5n seems to be the tiny gorilla in the cage at the moment. And correct me if I´m wrong , but the VG20 doesn´t have built-in NR´s , so what´s the advantage over the nex5n , which has everything the vg20 has and is 1/8th the size and a third the price ?

From the official promo literature, it does in fact appear that the 5n and vg20 will have exactly the same video specs, same chip, same processor. The 5n ships in september so we should start seeing real test video soon. If you are building it in a rig and rolling double system, there may be no compelling reason to move up to the vg20. I like the formfactor and audio system of the vg20, xlr would be nice but adaptors will not break the bank. I like rolling two cameras that match fairly close, if these ones do that would be amazing. A video style A-cam that looks slick, and a stealth b-cam that is dirt cheap. Note that they are also promoting the same max gain as the fs100, will be interesting to see if it is even close to as clean. Sony does seem to be actively promoting clean gain and not pushing to far beyond what is usable. The new 24mp chip tops out lower as expected given smaller pixels, but they certainly could have added more dirty grain if they wanted to.
