We're going to end the voting at Midnight Sunday, which will coincide with the posting of the new rules for CHALLENGE TWO (see HERE). SO, the voting that counts will end SUNDAY at midnight in spite of the fact that the poll says its open til the 15th.

So maybe ... err ... uhm ... update your first post with the voting close date in some nice bold font.

Just you know ... a suggestion

What's the deal with this?
Is it over?
Or does the rating just go on indefinitely?
In either case, when do we find out who won and who the secret artists are?
I mean the next fest has already been announced (which is cool but odd)

Yes, this challenge is over. Starting Monday we have a two week challenge for Mark's great idea about urban destruction. So Jack, feel free to jump onboard even it is in a writing/creative ideas kind of thing.

I'll tell you guys, I am seeing a level of work here I have never seen before. Great stuff.

As far as announcing the winner, I don't know. I just know it wan't me....

But voting isn't over yet.
I mean I wouldn't consider it over until the voting is closed and the participants are named and we have a winner. Especially since it's neck and neck with 2 and 4.
Am I missing something?

Wow. That was a tough decision that was.

First of all, GREAT challenge Mark. Super idea. I look forward to seeing more of these.

I am astounded what can be done with vfx. So impressive.

Second of all, each of the participants did a great job. Each entry had a unique quality to their composition.

My vote ended up coming down to #2 and #4.

I love the movement of the trees in #4. I think it goes without saying that this was very effective and really well done. And as for that camera pull... I liked it though I wish that it didn't "snap" into the final hold. Made a very convincing effect become suddenly "fake" feeling. I would loved to have seen that be much more gradual. (kudos for the move, though. And wow... it looks like you attempted to create a "3D effect" with the foreground moving at a different speed from the background. And not just at the bare tree but in the hillside. Really nice.) And I LOVED ending the clip on the transition to the original photo. Very cool to see the before/after work.

However, #2 got my vote based on the fact that I felt that if I had to use one of these plates in a film, I would have chosen it (though, as I stated, it was CLOSE!)

#2 was very effective in creating depth and realism. The inability to make out the mountain in the background is so accurate. I LOVED the shadows racing across the frozen lake. And the snow looked more "real" though it didn't move in relation to the obviously racing clouds (but this did not bother me). My one suggestion would be to add traces of low-lying wisps of fog swirling on the frozen lake. (Not trying to be picky but this would make this clip near perfect. At least it would look like what I see every winter in NH!)

#1 and #3.... you guys really did a great job and don't mean to snub you in my decision. You both can do more than I could EVER do! And you both added elements that made your entries unique and equally as impressive.

GREAT JOB TO YOU ALL!

I can't wait for more examples of these challenges!!!

..................

Any chance of having a "demonstration" by one (or more) of the participants? I'd love a little info on how they approached and accomplished their task.

Nope. That's exactly how it is going to work.

Like I said in an earlier post all I know is I got my guts stomped.

Me too. But I've been around the dvxfests long enough to grow used to that. Fun though.

I don't know which one is Mattykins but if he wins while only spending 1+1/2 hrs on his entry then I think we should tie him up and hide him somewhere until the next fest is over. He must have spent a little more time on it
than that though. Must have. You better have, lol. Otherwise I want to see a kickass breakdown. :)

Haha, I can assure you, I did not win.

I am reworking the entry now. To salvage my name. :) Basically I cleaned up the plate. And that is it. haha.

Well I don't know whats going on then. I think, sort of. I'm confused now. Oh well.

...

There is something else I wanted to mention while I'm here.

I know this is the first fest & everything. I'm not sure if I like the realtime gallop poll thing. Maybe at some future point we could have the results hidden until the totals are tallied up like in the dvxfests? I might like that a little better.
-Thanks.

I thought all the entries were pretty good but it came down to #2 and #4 for me. It was tough choosing between the two and ultimately, I went with #2 for overall realism, but I have to admit the blowing trees in #4 were really cool. Looking forward to the breakdowns for each.

My 2 cents...

Entry1: Had the best "Frozen Lake" look. The white (more frozen) sections matched well with the shore line etc. I liked the effort of the flickering light but it seemed a little off to me. 3rd best snow for me.

Entry2: Best snow, decent ice. Great cloud shadows, loved them. This would have gotten my vote if it had more layers of fog. In a storm that massize, you can barely see the horizon.

Entry 3: I really liked the ones that put the trees in.

Entry 4: The camera move was impressive but not necessary. 2nd best snow. Loved the motion on the trees (even if the one on the right is floating of the bottom of the frame :) ) The only prob with the motion is that only the far ground and fore ground ones are doing it, made me wish the other trees were moving too, but I wouldn't have wished that if the far ground trees weren't moving, or maybe moving as much. The fog actually sold me on this one, loved the layering.

All were better than I could do, great stuff.

Just to voice an opinion:

I liked the snow in #1 a lot. The cross blow really sold the effect for me.

Number 2 had a feel of a storm and the shadows and overall feel of the storm really works great for me.

Number 4, from the sweeping start to the trees moving, it felt the most realistic and really sealed the deal for me.

Number 3 sort of got lost in the mix compared with the others.

Great job to everyone though... Can't wait to see how you did it.

It was a close decission between 2 & 4 ....HHmmm who to vote for .

Voting Done ..Great work guys

Ian

That was a laugh. I virtually twist my bros arm off to get him to vote on this.

Ian: " Which one is yours?"
Me: : "Never mind. Pick one and vote for it."
Ian": "4 is pretty good." Looks back over at me.
Me: " Then vote for it."

Time lapses.

Me: "Vote yet?"
Bro:"No."
Me: "Vote! I don't care who you vote for. Vote!"

later:

Me: "Vote yet?"
Bro: Yeah."
Me: "So who'jda vote for?"
Bro: "I can't say."

Me: "Well you liked 4. Just say you voted for 4. I don't give a ****. If that's what you liked. I voted for 4 too. So what was it?"

Bro: "Can't say. I never say who I vote for."

Me: "I dont give a god dam....."

Alright, as promised - I have actually redone my VFX entry. Where exactly do I upload it to to exhibit it?
