The Dude Abides
Ok, guys. Hopefully Matt will see this and move this either as a sticky or into the VFX thread or whatever. I'm not sure how to make that happen but wanted to get this up until he can decide how to handle this.

As you know, this is our first challenge and was done on short notice with no promotion. Thus, we only have four entries but are happy to present them. Please vote for the best. There are no prizes but we'll hopefully get a little friendly competition going. We'll post breakdowns so we can all learn a thing or two when the voting is over.

Go HERE to view the entries. Then vote for your favorite. VOTING CLOSES SUNDAY April 6th at MIDNIGHT!!!

We'll make these competitions anonymous so that the voting is fair. Have at it!

If Entry 4 didn't have the camera move in it would have been a close call between 4 and 2. But I think 2 was the most believable.

I definitely liked 2. The camera move in 4 is impressive but 2 is the most believable, largely due to the feeling of depth the snow had, and I thought the shadows of the fast rolling clouds were as evocative as the camera move in 4 if not more so. I expected the Ring Wraiths to gallop across the ice with those clouds.

4 was great but the foreground snow seemed too sharp or polished or something.

2 made me think, "who did this? I could actually use that in a movie."

1 and three were aesthetically very pleasing.

3 had a magical kind of feel and I liked the pulsing light in the window in the woods in 1.

All way better than I could do.

I have to concur with Jack's commentary. I found 2 to be the most believable, but 1 and 3 were certainly close to the mark, imo.

Though this seems to be a very humble beginning for the fest, I can appreciate the goal and hope to see many more challenges this year.

I'd like to help in one way or another in a future challenge. I'm far from a vfx expert, but one thing I can offer is pretty good greenscreen footage for everyone to use as a baseline element, even at HD frame sizes.

Kudos to Matt and everyone who's helping or participating. :)

I guess that makes four of us as I like 2 the best overall. There were things I like in 4, particularly the motion of the trees and the "camera movement," however I didn't like the snow as much as in 2. I felt a lot of depth in 2 also. The first thing that hit me on 2 was the movement of the shadows.

Wow. great work everyone.

I kind of thought the camera move in 4 felt too much like a zoom(which presumably it was) and not really like a camera move at all. It took away from it a little, in my view. Because when it stopped and I could just look at the image, I was much more impressed.

What I like about #3 is the amount of detail left in the picture. Makes it seem almost like the hardest to accomplish. And I really love the look of the cloud cover over the hill with the hint of sunlight behind.

I know hosting full res versions would be tough, but what about just full res grabs?

All four of these guys make me jealous with their fx skills. Great work by each of them. It was almost a tie between 2 and 4 for me but 2 won by a hair for those awesome rolling cloud shadows.

Ok, so I'm going to be a little nitpicky here, and you all can rail me for it or concur. It's just my opinion.

But, I'm voting for #3. I think #2 is probably the coolest looking, but along with #1, the trees in the foreground were removed. I guess one can say that maybe they've been chopped down for the winter, but I would still like to see those darned trees.

That leaves #3 and #4. #4 is slick, but again I can tell the original trees were removed and replaced with particle trees.

So #3 gets my vote because at I can really believe that those are the same trees sans leaves (even if they are not any part of the originals).

Not the only reason, though. I really like the glowing house light from the hillside. The whole scene looks like a color lithograph, which is pretty cool visually.

Anyway, my two cents for what they're worth.

Cheers!

I also voted for entry #2,

Like JDS said, there it a real feeling of depth there.

The shadowing across the ice really sold me on that one.

I like ed number 4 as well, though it didn't have the weight that number 2 had.

Great work to all, and I must say I was very impressed with all the entries.

I liked 2 a lot, but wow 4 was amazing. I really liked the camera move- it may have taken some credibility out of it but I thought it was a very well done effect.

2 or 4? 2 or 4?....
2 was more believable but I did like 4. I think the movement in the trees tickled my fancy.

shoot.. I was basing my vote on the still alone. *smacks head*

All three were really great efforts. If I had to choose, I think it would be #4. I wish there was more of a 'smooth in' and better 'foresnow'. I dig the live trees and movement vs the other still shots.

#2 is nice, but it looks like a timelapse footage with the clouds moving across the lake.

#1 is cool, but the snow looked like a still vfx plate moving across the screen.

I think a very slight camera movement (dolly/pan) would have been the most effective in this instance.

yay! lOoking forward to seeing more of these. :)

I thought 2 looked more real but was a bit grainy. I liked the trees in 4 and thought it would be good for an animated film. There's something I can learn from all of them. Looking forward to the breakdowns.

I guess 4 gets my vote.

What's the deal with this?
Is it over?
Or does the rating just go on indefinitely?
In either case, when do we find out who won and who the secret artists are?
I mean the next fest has already been announced (which is cool but odd)

Haha, I am so glad I spent an hour an a half on my entry to put something in there. There is some talent here, no doubt about it. I am reworking my entry now, actually putting the time into it so as to be of assistance to people.

I give 2 my vote.

I did enjoy 4, however the camera pull was off-putting. And it seemed the moving pines could have been tweaked a tad. Since one of them basically folds in half. It is great work for a limited time. No doubt.

Interested to see what package was used for the trees? Vue?

According to the top of the poll, it says:

This poll will close on 04-15-2008 at 04:03 PM

So I guess it's the 15th?
