VFR overcrank & HD-SDI out

A strange thing happened to me yesterday. I was at my friend's production studio and we were doing a greenscreen test.

I hooked the camera up to a monitor via HD-SDI, put it into 1080 30p, turned on VFR and then dialed up to 60.

The strange thing was that there was output where I thought there would just be a black screen.

What is the HD-SDI output in such a case? Is it 1080i or something else? I'm not quite sure what is going on here.

I wonder why Panasonic didn't decide to just downres the 1080p overcrank to 720p overcrank so it could actually be outputted in the correct framerate. In certain instances I could see it being more desirable to record (via external recorder) 720p overcrank at 422 than using 1080p AVCCAM overcrank for things like composite work. I know you can do 720 60p in camera, but what about 48fps or 36fps? You would think it would be easy to do it on the fly since it sometimes already does it on the fly depending on whether or not your monitor is 1080 or 720. Jan why was this not an option?
