VFR corrupting SD cards

Hey everyone. This week, I used the VFR feature for timelapse a few times. Two days ago, I stepped away from the camera for about an hour, and when I came back, the recording had stopped and the "Check Card" warning appeared. I tested the card on both my mac and PC and it was unreadable on both platforms.

Since my DVX200 had never done this before, I attributed the problem to my SD card. Today, I attempted another timelapse and encountered the same problem resulting in a second corrupted SD card. The camera is currently on its way to Panasonic to be worked on. The rep said he hasn't heard of this problem before, so for my own curiosity, I thought I'd hit the forum to see if anyone had encountered this, or any other recording problems with VFR or could offer any ideas as to what could be causing this...

Thanks!

I've done a fair amount of VFR recording at 120fps. No SD card issues. I've been using SanDisk Extreme PRO 64Gb U3. Did you try a different spec card? Maybe the VFR is stressing the specs of what you're using.

That was actually the first card I used. The second was a 64gb Lexar U3. I considered that, but VFR actually records at lower quality than the All-200I I usually record at.

FWIW....this doesn't sound like a camera h/w issue to me. Maybe f/w. I'm surprised Panny had you send it back. Let us know what they find!

I'm hoping you're right. But whatever the issue, I'm sure Panny will do their due diligence. And I'll definitely keep you updated.

(Maybe) a dumb question, but are the cards you're using on the list of cards approved for that use(VFR) by Panny? Not just meeting/exceeding the specs, but the cards are actually approved/recommended? I've seen name brand cards that met/exceeded specs, but were not approved, cause problems in equipment. I also remember on the original C300, cards that were approved and could be used for "normal" shooting, but weren't approved for off-speed shooting. Good luck and hopefully it gets straightened out quickly for you.

Thanks for the info. I didnt know that about the C300. To my knowledge, Panny hasn't listed anything specific for VFR. Only that the card should be speed class U3

ok, but what cards are you using?

interesting thread..

I bought two Lexar 128GB x1000 cards when they were released in twin packs late last year for use in my DVX200. They were delivered in February, by May one of them had failed when I returned it to the camera after taking info off it.

In June the other one failed in exactly the same way. I had to send them back to Lexar America and Lexar's service was excellent, they replaced both of them almost by return post, but as I have two Lexar 250 GB cards now I am feeling a bit anxious!!

(we video event work, so it is not re-doable).

Both cards failed without warning, just unreadable by camera and computer. Luckily I had taken the info off both cards when they failed.

Cheers,

Vaughan

Jason, I was using a 64 gb Sandisk Extreme Pro sdxc U3 class 10, and a 128 gb Lexar 1000x sdxc U3, also class 10.

Vaughan,

Thanks for sharing. What's bothering me is that it happened to two different brands of cards. After the SD extreme pro failed, I switched to the Lexar. This led me to believe it was a camera issue. I'll find out sometime this week (hopefully) and will give an update.

That's awful. Hopefully the problem is with the camera, local, acute and fixable...and not a design flaw affecting all DVX200's.

I also use SanDisk Extreme SDXC U3 Class 10 90 MB/s SDCX cards in 128 and 64 GB versions.

There were some fixes in f/w 1.72 for VFR issues. Maybe they broke something or maybe they fixed something and you aren't using 1.72?

Update:

The Panasonic tech called this morning and said he ran VFR with no problems on a Panasonic card. He asked me to send in the corrupted cards for diagnostics.
