Very hot hpx170

my hpx170 got put away today while still powered on. not running. and no card in it. just powered on. it spent about 2.5 hours in a pelican case in my suv.

i unloaded the truck a few min ago, opened the case and was surprised by a pretty significant waft of heat. i thought it was odd, as its not that hot out and none of the gear was warm to the touch.

so i felt around and nothing was that hot - except the camera. it was still powered on and hot to touch. the attached zacuto baseplate was nearly painfully hot.

i have run the camera for very long days and even a couple multi-day time lapses and never noticed much if any heat.

anyone have any thoughts, is this build up from being in a relatively airtight case or might something be wrong in the power section of the camera...?

No insight but I did the same thing a few weeks ago. Definitely kind of spooked me. Never had any issues since though.

I have mine set to "auto off" after 5mins, so If I forget it's not an issue..

Cheers
Tom

My guess would be that if it wasn't able to breath in that case even a small amount of heat dissipation over 2.5 hours would build up considerably. I've had my 200A powered on for almost that long on a tripod and never noticed much heat. If it's a power supply issue, you'll likely notice something else cropping up soon, but I'll bet it's fine!

I noticed that also when filming with a friend. He put his HPX170 in his backpack with it on. When he openned the pack about 1/2 hour later the cam was very very hot. Lesson learned. As a matter of habit I now remove the battery when packing my HPX away.
