Very Dark LCD Screen When Canon 24-70mm L (With 4/3 Adaptor) Was Mounted On An AF102

Hi all,

I went to test out the AF102 (PAL Asia version of AF100). I had mounted the Canon 24-70mm L with a micro 4/3 (adaptor without manual aperture control) and the whole video camera's LCD screen was dark, very very dark. Thus I couldnt carry out any proper tests. Then, we used the kit lens 14-140 f4-5.6, and the LCD was bright with all the manual setting visible on the screen.

What could be the reason?

Very much appreciated all comments.

Cheers,
Jack

I use various Canon lenses on the AF, including the 24-70, & have never seen this problem. Was the LCD just dark, or was it black?

If it was black it might be a couple of things. First make sure "Lens Check" is disabled in the menu. If it already is I suspect the issue is the adapter. The AF has a shutter used for black balancing, & probably other functions. If too much pressure is exerted on the mount the shutter will automatically close. I've caused this to happen briefly when filming with heavy lenses, but generally it's not an issue, & I regularly use the 24-70 without rails.

But it's also possible to cause the shutter to close by "Lens Wacking" at the mount. Any time I tried wacking at the m43 mount the shutter will intermittently close, & ruin the shot. Doesn't matter if the lens is electronic, or dumb, the shutter will still react.

So if there's a flaw with your EOS adapter I imagine it could cause the shutter to close too.

Good luck!

Best,
Bern

I use that exact same Fotodiox adapter.

Another thought. Is the EOS aperture blades wide open? It's possible to stop these down if the lens is removed from a Canon body while the DOF preview button is held down, but this is usually done on purpose.

Yeah mount the lens on a Canon body, open to F2.8, turn the camera off and try the lens again.

Dear all,

I bought a new adaptor with aperfture ring and viola... the AF102 + 24-70 setup works. I just bought an used set from another short film maker, only just under 200 hours.

Testing the video out tonight.

Cheers
