Very basic workflow question

I just ordered my HVX and will jump right into a long-term shooting project with it next week. I plan on shooting HD 720p.

My question is when I edit the footage for a final DVD what happens to the 16:9 aspect if someone views it on a standard CRT TV? The final video will be going out on DVD to people across the country that will be viewing it on various TV's.

I know I'm late in the game here but I've been shooting 4:3 up to this point. Thanks!

When encoding/exporting to MPEG2 for DVD you have the option of encoding to a widescreen pixel aspect ratio (1.2 to 1) or standard pixel aspect ratio (.9 to 1) --- usually presets within programs will simply say "widescreen" or "standard" or something similar.

Just make sure to set your NLE timeline to match whatever you are shooting, such as DVCPro HD, 1080i 24p ...etc.

Workflow will largely depend on what software NLE you are using.

The aspect ratio is handled by the DVD player. If the disk is in widescreen format and the DVD knows that the TV is a 4:3 model, then the DVD player will letterbox the output. Any TV can thus display 16:9 DVD content with no loss of scene information (except for normal overscan).
