Vertical Smear

I shoot some HD footage for the first time this weekend. My camera, an HVX2001AE, is about a month old and I have only shot SD to tape previously.
When I watched the material I noticed vertical lines all over some of the footage. The lines appear only in dark areas, and not in highlights. I have read about this problem before and it is known as "Vertical Smear". But if I remeber right - these smears appear only in highlights right?
Can somebody help me identify the smears and what it is that is causing them?

Here is a link to the footage: www.8thgradefilms.com/P2Test720pn.mov

It looks like you are getting massive flaring from those colored par lights above the stage.

If changed the angle of shooting did it go away? Also there seems to be alot of smoke on stage which probably made the problem stand out more.

Where you shooting without the lens hood?

One way to defeat vertical smearing is to purchase a low power Black Pro Mist Filter (1/8th) it will make light sources bloom rather than smear and should be subtle enough to not affect your overall image too much. I normally have a screw on 1/8th that I keep on my camera 80% of the time.

lens hood was off

lens hood was off

As a matter of fact the lens hood was off since I had used an adapter earlier that day and forgot to bring the hood.
I hope that takes care of the problem. As long as there is nothing wrong with the CCD:s I'm a happy camper.
