I just received almost new GH1 which had that exact look in low light scenes. I managed to improve the look significantly on my GH1. Here is what I did:
- Made the camera film a light source for a few hours (25 watt halogen from ~0.5 meter distance with two sheets of white paper between the lamp and the camera, lens on, ISO 125, aperture f2, +3 stops over exposure)
After two hours of continuous shooting of the white light the image had already improved with less vertical stripes and banding. What I did next was to
- Install the hack using the latest Ptool (used lpowell max. latitude settings)
The image became decent. In low light scenes there is a trace of the vertical stripes still visible, but in normally lit scenes the picture is near flawless. I am going to shoot the white light another two hours to see if I can make the vertical stripes vanish altogether.
Try all this at your own risk, especially make sure the intensity of the light that you shoot for a few hours does not greatly exceed +3 stops over exposure to avoid damaging the sensor. It is important that the exposure is consistent over the image area. Hope it helps and the GH1 can be improved. Mine is now entirely workable and it started out just like yours.
After about twenty hours of shooting a white light with a bit over three stops over exposure my GH1, which looked exactly like the video above, can now be considered cured.
All of the many vertical stripes are gone plus the one horizontal line that divided the image into two segments with different image intensities as if the sensor was stitched together from multiple pieces (which it probably is) are gone. I can still find traces of the stripes and the horizontal divisions, but I need to look close. If I didn't know they were there I might not notice.
It may be that the last batch of new GH1's were assembled from left over parts that didn't pass QC in the first round when the camera was newer and more expensive. It's not GH2, but with the hard work of the hack contributors can still be considered somewhat competitive. Good for a B-cam, for example.
