Version for sound designer is killing me!

We are at the stage of post where the sound designer needs a copy. The one hour is in 1080i Pro Rez and comes in at about 80 gigs.
The sound designer wants a version with countdowns top and tail and burned in TC on the show. Easy and done.
He now wants it in H264 or some smaller file size. H264 was cooking for 20+ hours yesterday ( on my quad) and had still only reached 31 percent complete on the (always wrong) apple dialogue box.
Is there a faster or better way to get this down to a smaller file size? I know pro rez will choke his system. I am trying DVCProHD version now not knowing what the file size will be in the end but I am assuming about 50 gigs.
Thanks

How are you doing the conversion?

If you're trying to export from FCP using Compressor, it's probably going to take a long time. And by a long time, I mean that we'll be past mid-term elections by the time it's done.

Export a self-contained FCP movie at current project settings, then quit FCP. Use Compressor as a standalone to convert to h.264. It may take an hour or two, but it should be faster than exporting straight from FCP.

My sound guy uses a 320x240 h264 file along with a OMF. But at the longest my edits are 90 secs. An hour long edit is going to take forever. You might try exporting to quicktime (not QT conversion but the other one) and then using QT to export a low rez preview copy it might just be faster

First, nail down the specs on how he wants the picture.

If he really wants h264, then consider spending $200 on an Elgato Turbo. It plugs into a USB port and will encode to h264 in close to real time.
