Dark Side of the Camera
My girfriend an me live in the world of the 30s and 40s.
Music, clothing, cars, furniture and all - every day, not just on weekends.

We spend new years eve with friends in Fanhams Hall near London.

All shots where done from only 3 camera positions with a HVX, no extra light, nothing was staged ore blocked. I just stood in the background and tried to fetch some pictures.

The look was done in After FX and emulates a early 8mm camera at 15 frames per second.

The compression takes much of the detail away but it looks great in full HD.

have fun, Frank

Thanks for that post...

I enjoyed your short and it's looks quite convincing. Is it hard to live in the past? Where do you buy your clothes?

Happy New Year...Jeffro

WoW. Crazy stuff there ;)

You really nailed the look. Or maybe it's just because the subjects were so convincing. Or probably... a bit of both.

Wow, that looked totally authentic! Great job! But yeah, the modern digital cameras were a bit of a give-a-way. Haha!

That was great. The shot with the guy holding the camera looks like everyone's standing around wondering what that "crazy contraption" is :)

Hard to believe the folks in that footage are modern day people

This is incredibly believable. The moment I saw the electronic zoom I knew you were serious. Wow.

That's pretty cool, man. Well done.

Very well done. It had me back there watching it. I was waiting for the air raid sirens.

holly cow, that was amazing!

im not sure i see the effect of 15fps though. unless its 15fps being played back at 15fps, in which case, how did you achieve this?

you know, with your location you should shoot a short with this style.

That looked quite believable. I think I could tell the titles were done in the computer but until the digital cameras I thought it was probably authentic.

I'm pretty sure that's what he means. It's not overcranking or undercranking, he just used 15fps for the slightly stuttery motion.

Commuting between the two "timezones" if you work as an editor and filmmaker with all those digital gizmos is sometimes odd, but what the heck as long it is fun on both sides.

We get our "Equipment" in Antique Stores, Ebay, Fleamarkets, Charity Shops and whatnot.

Bshhhht! The Digital still camera is actualy a secret war development ;-)

I decidet to leave it in there since nobody will belive me that the film was done last week.

Some with a trained eye also already noticed that I used a zoom instead of a dolly.

Thanks for your comments, Frank

P.S. The 15fps look was done by rendering the 1080i project to 15fps full frame and throwing it to a 25fps timeline in Premiere.

Well done, old boy. Jolly good, Right, right.
2 things come to mind:

1) This would make a great Canon Powershot commercial or whatever digital camera that guy had.

2) It reminds me of Reniors "Rules of the Game".

but then would that not give the motion a sped up feeling? It felt like realtime to me, just choppier?

Wow, that looked quite authentic! Made me want to tell those people to "quit India" and give my grandparents their independence.

It reminded me of a film one of my friends made in high school (shot on 8mm), called "Scenes from the Twenties" which basically involved a bunch of people in period costumes getting drunk in a speak-easy.

Wow - as many other have already said - the footage was incredibly convincing.
I really enjoyed the inclusion of the digital camera.
It was like a 'where's waldo' moment within a very convincing period piece.

Nice job.

That is absolutely fascinating.
Not to derail the focus of your thread - but how long have you been doing this?

Since I was 16. I skipped the whole teenage and twen culture.

Started with early Bob Wills and Benny Goodman instead of Sugar Hill Gang and Rock Steady Crew ;-)

I´m 41 now.
