venetian lines help

ok i know this is gonna make me sound like an idiot, but whatever. ive had my dvx for like 4 months, without using it much until about the last month or so. ive only used one brand of tapes, which was sony premiums. i know some people think that is a dumb idea to use sony tapes with a panny cam, but thats what i did and theres no goin back on that. recently, ive been getting venetian lines (sp?) and sometimes the camera doesnt even record when it says it is anymore. is this a head cleaning issue? would a panasonic head cleaning tape be bad to use? should i get it professionally cleaned? any other suggestions? please help i need to use the cam and it is almost unusable right now.

It's definitely a head cleaning issue. I'd get the heads cleaned, then at least consider switching to Panny tapes.

Totally agree! Get the heads cleaned and then consider a switch over to Panasonic tapes while the DVX is still young, because I'm pretty sure Sony and Panny tapes both use different lubricant (and it's probably best to go with the Panasonic side of things)

In rgerads to this dry/wet lube thing, isn't this what metal evaoprated means? Which is both clearly branded on both panny and sony tapes: ME. I mean I will be the first to say I do not know, but there are no visible differences in the tapes, the specs are the same across the board in any data sheet. they both claim Metal Evaporated technology. And they taste exactly alike when spread on toast or sprinkled over breakfast cereal.

I guess my experience is this. Using a Sony deck (which has heads just like a camera, just no CCD/CMOS) I would recieve MiniDV tapes from all over the country recorded (and often re-re-re-recorded) from everything from $140 Canon handhelds to VX2100s and XL1s. These tapes were brands from the majors, to foreign tape manufacturers I have never heard of ever. Some were old, some were new.

And you know when we needed to get our heads clean? When we put in a tape that was jacked up. Either by someone elses heads being dirty and smearing crap on the tape, or some damage to the tape (i.e. spillage).

Didn't matter what brand. Didn't matter it had been recorded over time and time again (though there were more artifacts and dropped frames on those tapes from time to time).

We could almost always tell which tape caused the dirt, track it back to the owner and find out they needed a head cleaning in the camera the tape came from or that there had been some damage to the tape.

And I don't mean this was a once a week thing, our rack usually had hundreds of tapes waiting to be fed into these three decks and two cheapo Canon cameras we had setup.

Thousands and thousands of hours of footage, hundred of different tape conditions and dozens of brands.

Once agin though, I will be the first to say I could be wrong. this is only my experience on decks. I've owned a DVX100 for exactly 4 days, so I can't really say. But i can say this...the DVX I have now has 500 + hours on it. The previous owner used everything from the cheapest Panasonic tapes to Sony DVCAM tapes. And it works like a charm.

I'm gonna stick with Panasonic PQ tapes from now on just in case.

I mean what can it hurt?

While I can't really comment on the rest of your post (I don't have the years of experience with different tape stocks/deck) The "metal evaporated" thing refers to the process by which the tape is manufactured (metal particles are "flashed" into a vapour then settle on the tape binder) - not the lubricant used. There shouldn't really be any visible differences :)

I stick with the panny AMQ ones - theyre not much more pricy and in all honesty I'd rather spend a couple of bucks more on stock if it lowers the likelyhood of dropouts or similar.

Tape's not really that expensive when you think about how much your camera's worth- right? :)

Thanks for the info on the ME, it's been bugging me, and I am just WAY too lazy to wiki such a thing. I had also heard the MQ tapes were discontinued. Once agin, shows how much I know about the whole issue.

im having a problem with my dvx like this to. I get those black bars through my footage occasionally and sometimes its bars with old footage in background with using new tapes and sometimes taping over something.

I didnt find this topic till later, but heres my topic. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=127056

What should i do? Ive been using sony premiums tapes since day one, had my dvx for like 2months. The camera has 65hours on heads, have only gone through about 15-20 tapes so its kinda more like 20hours on heads. Should i run a head cleaner tape then switch to panasonic tapes? I need this problem to stop, cause i dont want it to happen when filming a wedding or diff event.

Can anyone help me out with this? Should i run a head cleaner then switch to panasonic tapes? Would these tapes be fine for the dvx? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/177607-REG/Panasonic_AY_DVM60EJ_AY_DVM60EJ_Mini_DV_Video.html

I have a panasonic head cleaning tape, but i want to get a new head cleaning tape to clean them for the new tapes. Ive been using sony premiums i heard there wet tapes, and i think panasonic are dry tapes. Are those tape i linked dry tapes? Can someone link me to a head cleaner i can use for cleaning wet tape lube and making it clean for dry tapes.

Help needed, Thanks for any help.

Yes, run a head cleaner for about 5 (but no more than 10) seconds.

I would recommend switching to these tapes:

thanks for the input and link.

Whats the major difference between the tapes? I know one is pro, Does higher lineraty mean tape is stronger and doesnt break down/crumble as easy? Ive noticed several brands have both dv and dvc tapes, Whats the difference?
