Vegas vs Final Cut

I use vegas and it's my preference. I've seen FCP in action along with some other editing tools and I've always preferred Vegas BY FAR. Recently someone I know saw Vegas for the first time and their attitude was one of: "Yeah, this Vegas thing looks good. Maybe once you master this you can UPGRADE to the FCP program.

To me that's ridiculous as I don't consider FCP to be an "Upgrade". To date, there's nothing i cannot do on Vegas that I can do on FCP. But then again, i'm relatively new to editing in general.

So with all that being said, I thought I'd get the opinions of the rest of you guys. Is there anything FCP does that is really better than Vegas or is it all plain and simply personal preference?

u are probably more bound to get work using FCP... its just one of those things.. ppl in this industry are NLE prudes..lol..

It is personal preference.

They do the same things, one or the other does this or that, but FCP is not better.

I always found funny the ones who invest in an entire computer just so they can edit.

If Apple had any brains, they'd open up FCP to the PC market, but then, their computer sales would go down.

Onestly, it's difficult to be better than FCP. The whole world is abandoning the leader Avid for FCP. TV networks, productions houses, majors, anyone is moving to FCP.
As ex avid user and 5 years FCP user i can only say that FCP fits any need from holydays montage to feature film editing, from very low resolution to high end HDTV, or even custom, weird, banner's resolutions.

The stability of OSX and the power of Quicktime makes it the choice for the most demanding editors, directors and producers.

FCP Studio costs a fraction of the price of an equivalent solution. I don't know Vegas very much. So what i say is only based on what i know.

There are two things that FCP does, that Vegas does not:

1) it runs on MacOS.

2) it's installed in editing facilities everywhere, which means you're far more likely to encounter it and, if looking for a job as an editor, knowing FCP will be a lot more marketable than knowing Vegas.

No, it isn't.

FCP has great marketing, and it's a solid program. But there are many things that other NLEs do better than FCP does. Heck, *any* editor offers better P2 integration than FCP does, for one thing!

You don't like the P2 integration of FCP? Strange, it has a dedicated window, with clip preview, in-out selection, labeling and more before conversion.
Or it's the conversion that you don't like because it can't edit natively? Ok, IT EDITS natively because every bit is preserved during conversion, but it can be boring to have to import the clips instead of simply edit them directly.

Someday ?

FCP is not any better than Vegas and vica versa.

Accept it. It's a matter of preference and saying anything else is tired.

As is this thread, predictably.
