Vegas Pro 10, Prerendered preview doesnt run smooth at all, defeats the purpose

Hi,

Are any of you facing a problem in Vegas Pro 10 with prerendered playback ? The very purpose of prerendering is for smooth preview, but after i prerender a portion on my timeline and then playback, the playback is unreliable, jerky, and will play once smoothly but on repeat/looped playback will stutter. Reverse playback using jkl buttons on the keyboard is even more horrible. It plays maybe with a 3 fps kind of look.

One possiblility might be im rendering to the wrong type of prerender file. Cineform seems to be absent on vegas 10 for prerender file type. So ive been using Xvid mp4 with quite a low bitrate in my prerender settings. Tried just 640x360 frame size and even that gives unreliable timeline playback. What settings do you guys use for prerenders ?

Thanks

Depends on the footage you're using and the timeline you're editing on.

MP4 is not a particularly good editing codec, so I wouldn't prerender to it.

Hi David,

I was not editing a mp4, i had a .mov and a .avi on the timeline. I only prerendered them to .mp4 to view the clip smoothly. If its not an ideal setting i wonder why they've given an option to prerender to .mp4. But i think the .mp4 playback is messed up even if its a prerendered file. I tried mpeg2 and had better results. What format do you prerender to most of the time to just view transitions/cross-fades/fx etc smoothly ?

Thanks

I pre-render mp4 files of all sizes all the time with no problems at all.
I strongly suspect that previewing to Xvid mp4 is your problem as Xvid is not a Vegas-supported file format.
Try DV-AVI or one of the built-in mp4 options and see if that's any better.

I pre-render to MPEG-2 (mpg) using the NTSC DV Widescreen video stream template.

Footage is a canon .mov - 1080p. Another is an uncompressed avi. Just 2 clips on the timeline. Project is 1080p 24 fps. No interlacing ofcourse. Best render settings. I rendered to mpeg2 and found stable results. But i was keen to know if the other templates are there for namesake or they actually work in some situations. And also if its neccessary to use different prerender types for different types of clips on the timeline. Esp when using a timeline with mixed types of footage.
