Vegas Pro 10 Announced!

Interesting... I've had stability issues with Vegas and am determine to try and learn Premiere next time I have video I need to edit. Will have to see if the grass is greener or not.

I don't see anything there that looks like a re-write. Just more patching of the unstable code. I noticed they only mention GPU acceleration of ENCODING and only of the SONY AVC codec. Not exactly what many were hoping for.

Closed Captioning support finally is there (one of my primary reasons for abandoning the product) but still offers no provision for open captions apparently which is crucial for web delivery, with alternatives being available to encode properly for WMV and Quicktime containers that can use enbedded text. They got 1 of 4 right on that.

Track grouping is an excellent idea, but I see no provision yet for LOCKING a track. An incredible oversight much discussed on the forum. Especially when one of the scripters was able to get it done in about an hour.

I see nothing about improved Quicktime file handling. A major failure point that needs to be addressed. Nothing about playback speed enhancements. Nothing about support for VC-1, the OTHER BluRay standard.

All in all, not enough for me to bother upgrading to.

Audio FX on the clip level is nice; track grouping is nice. But in all, yet another snoozer of a release.

And siiiiiiiiiiiigh . . . yet another release with no P2 support. Not surprised, but there's always a twinge of disappointment.

I was hoping for an even darker interface. Guess I'll keep 9.0 for a while.
But I am excited to see how the 3D editing works, and I like the external mixer input!

Yeah, I share your disappointment. But as long as Vegas comes from Sony and P2 comes from Panasonic, that's surely the way it's gonna be.

If you look around at other forums, the Vegas faithful are all VERY excited about this release. The further I get away from that scene, the more I realize the product is just not targeted to folks like me.

It's a shame really. It could be so good. It's like they do JUST enough to keep selling it, but not enough to really make it great. Honestly, I think Edius is the sleeper in that market. The new version looks fantastic.

It is almost impossible to satisfy every user. Each user has his/her own specific needs. For every product release, it is always the case that some are excited and some are disgruntled. Works are done step by step and one by one with priority.

For example, if you know how prohibitive a Closed Captioning system is and how expensive Closed Captioning service is, you will appreciate the Closed Captioning feature in Vegas Pro, there is Caption preview, editing, capture and print etc. This feature easily saves some users thousands of dollars which had
happened to some beta testers already.

I know you are looking for Open Captioning, and it is not there yet, but Vegas Pro 10 does provide Webcast Captioning for YouTube, RealPlayer, WMP and QuickTime by exporting caption files in respective formats. This solution is less intrusive than Open Captioning, and the caption work can bring back and reuse. It is almost impossible to reuse Open Captioning for TV broadcast.

I'd still LIKE to be among the Vegas faithful, but it's moved so slowly and been so Sony-fied that it's hard not to get a bit sneery about it.

Meanwhile, the excitement is happening over at Adobe. Which is a shame, because mano-a-mano, I'd rather use Vegas any time, but one can't deny Adobe's desire to move forward and deliver greater, more exciting things.

Vegas has the best bones of any NLE, and can be developed into something simply breathtaking, but these crawl-paced "new versions" which are continually little more than incremental updates are getting quite tedious.

The last kick-ass update was Version 5. Since then, it's all been "nice, but meh."

Agreed. But see, here's what's maddening. At the core, an NLE has but one job. And that is to edit video. I don't need it to be a DAW. I don't need it to fly me to the moon. I just need to ingest, cut, and render video. Reliably. And Vegas has been failing at that mission for at least the last two major releases. It has gone from the most stable NLE around, to the buggiest and flakiest. I can't even FATHOM trying to cut a 3D project on this NLE.

We are talking about a $600 program that can't lock a track and can't generate tone. How in the heck can you consider yourself a PRO NLE and you can't even lay bars and tone (and no title card generator either) at the head of a tape? Take back 3D and give me the basics.

I know full well how prohibitive CC is. I sit on the 508 committe for my govt. agency, and I work with our PBS affilliate. And I've got to meet Red book. And until very recently, I couldn't do that AT ALL with Vegas. CC support only came this year in any form. It's 2010, and we are talking about a Pro NLE that couldn't produce a legal broadcast tape for any US market by FCC regulations. You had to pay to have it done 3rd party.

V10Pro looks to solve most of my issues with providing captions for web based video and possibly CC as long as they don't continue to demand you work in Sony MXF only which they only allow up to 50 Mbps.

Open captioning is a means of last resort. I don't like going that way, but sometimes it's demanded in my environment and I have to follow the rules I am given.

Vegas can lay bars and tone down on a tape. I used to do it all the time when I still used tape.

I still want support for the Matrox MXO2, Sony to buy and natively implement raylight, and enhanced GPU decoding (a la CS5).

Wait, am I seeing this right? CUDA acceleration for encoding, but not for decoding? Ridiculous... please someone tell me I am wrong.

Perrone, I am not an full time editor, but I disagree on NLEs not needing to be DAWs. Editors are not mixers, sure, but being able to do it all-but-the-VFX in one program feels very natural in smaller projects. At least when you work on something with dialogue or all audio coming in married with the footage. I love Vegas in great part because of its audio strength. Fast, powerful, and intuitive audio is a thing of beauty when you need to work fast.

Agreed. The fact that I can do an amazing 5.1 mix within my NLE is great! I cut in Vegas, export the timeline to after effects for onlining. Then Vegas becomes my DAW and I mix the movie in there. What's great is that I can build upon my temp mix without having to go somewhere else.

Print to tape with Line 21 and VANC is the answer to TV broadcast needs.
Capture with Line 21 and VANC makes Vegas Pro keep existing CC.
Various export formats help reuse CC for Webcast Captioning
and DVD Architect subtitles.
Preview of CC and editing improves CC accuracy.

Closed Captioning was added into Vegas Pro 9.0d, related CC improvements in 10 are reactions to NAB feedback. I think Open Captioning will be there at some point.

Yes, and temporary mixes are tied with editing, a lot of motivations are from audio, and vice versa.

When I saw the thread title, I thought I was going to curse my recent purchase of version 9 instead of waiting, but looking through the press release, I'm not too annoyed. There's a few nice to haves in there, but other than 3D, it doesn't do anything fundamentally different or better than what I'm doing in 9. No upgrade license for me.

I should have said to "file". Said "tape" by habit since I have ZERO provision to lay HD down to tape.

I am curios where tone is in Vegas. I've never found it. I did get a tone generator so I could meet spec. Bars was fine.

I know when you print to tape you have the option of adding black leader/trailer, color bars, and a checkbox for 1kHz tone with test pattern. If you're just rendering for delivery, you'll have to get your own tone .wav i guess.
