Vegas looks good.

I can pickup:
Vegas® 4.0 - Professional Digital Video and Audio Production

Vegas® 4.0 Includes FREE ScreenBlast ACID and Vision Series 1 Background Fills

for $150 off of the student software discount websites. We use FCP4 and Macs. But I was talking with John (Hudson) and he suggested I get Vegas since I have a PC and I want to edit a short film myself. He said it was really good.

Is this a good deal? Are there any cheap books that can help me get started?

Looks like Vegas is pretty popular. I got Vegas 2.0?? from a record producer years ago when my band was about to be signed...I wanted to edit our video...He said it was VERY expensive??

$150 now! I'm ready to buy! :)

Thanks for your help!

Re: Vegas looks good.

Hi Ampro

Thats a pretty good deal ($150.00 for Vegas 4.0 Plus Acid?).  I'd do it.  I know some here are eager to upgrade but Im sticking with Version 4 until it warrants otherwise.  I know there are some killer additions to Version 5 but 4 will do me fine for now.  Ill be on the train for 6 no doubt.

$150.00 ?   Good deal.

Acid 4 is a fun tool as well and will allow you to more or less create your own music (Its super easy) but the Vision Series is nothing but crap backgrounds; I guess you could use it for a fake newscast? :P

Re: Vegas looks good.

If you're buying now, I'd suggest getting Vegas 5. IMHO, the best improvements to vegas 5 (over v4) are the numerous workflow enhancements. You can now access nearly any function via keyboard shortcuts. If you're interested in working with audio, Vegas is a no-brainer. It handles audio better than any out NLE out there (as many know, Vegas started out as an audio-only program).

If you are able to purchase from academic resellers, then V5 is pretty much the same price as V4. In fact, I didn't even know any authorized academic reseller still carried v4 ???

Re: Vegas looks good.

Thats a good point Jive; purchasing V5 through an Academic Discount just might be the way to go.

Re: Vegas looks good.

Be SURE to get +DVD, though.  For not that much more, you get a LOT, including a full Dolby Digital encoder.

If making a choice between ACID and +DVD, go with the DVD.  No question.  You can do most of what you'd do in ACID within Vegas, and DVD-A gives you that wonderful encoder -- as well as a full DVD authoring app.

Re: Vegas looks good.

Thanks John, Jive, and David
OK...So Vegas 5 + DVD...Some more help please...PLEASE

Seems like "I want to get Vegas" has now turned into "I need to get Vegas because our editor just backed out!!! >:( " It seems like fear of commitment... :(

So I'm stepping up! I can do this. I've just (kinda) taught myself FCP4, so I'll have to start again. 2 questions:

1. I need a book! (or do I?)

2. What are the (above) minimum requirements for my PC you guys suggest.

Thanks for your feedback in (24P) advance :) !

Re: Vegas looks good.

Dennis Spotted Eagle's book is the best I've seen, though the Vegas 5 version isn't quite released yet.

Vegas appears to run on just about anything (I'll bet if I loaded it onto my old PII 250MHz, 32MB RAM laptop, it would run), but for it to run WELL in a very pleasing manner, I'd suggest NO less than a P4 2.0 GHz with 512MB DDR RAM -- and I'd say a middling system would be 2.5 GHz with a gig of DDR RAM.

Otherwise, your previews will be nearly unwatchable with only a few layers (think of bad streaming video) and your render times will be vast.

Re: Vegas looks good.

Look for one WITH +DVD; I don't think you can by DVD Architect separately.

Besides, even if you can, you'll get a better deal with them together.

Re: Vegas looks good.

If you're going for Vegas 5, keep in mind that it requires Windows XP, it won't work on a system loaded with WinME or Win98SE, etc. So add XP to your list of system requirements.

Re: Vegas looks good.

If you're looking to save the shipping, go to Academic Superstore at http://www.academicsuperstore.com/market/marketdisp.html?PartNo=712312&qk_srch=vegas.

I have used them for a few purchases and they have always been good. In addition, the one you posted wasn't the production suite (so it doesn't come with Magic Bullet or Boris Grafitti, which while it is a limited version, much of what it doesn't provide, Vegas does).  Just my 2 cents.

Re: Vegas looks good.

Just FYI, all versions of Vegas 5 (including +DVD) come with Magic Bullet and Boris Graffiti LTD. The "Production Suite" addition to the production name really doesn't mean that you get anything more. They're just calling it the "Vegas+DVD Production Suite" if you get the +DVD version. :)

Re: Vegas looks good.

If someone asks, can I still say I use "Vegas+DVD Production Suite"?? It sounds better!  :D

Barry luckily I'm running XP. (phew I don't need anything else on that list)  :P

Thanks guys!

Re: Vegas looks good.

Studen SuperStore had Vegas at least when we bought it for $260.00 Thats Vegas5. Came with Boris LTD and Movie Looks from Majic Bullet. Havent played with the Borris much but the movie looks is awsome, but is a render HOGGG. Ya need about 10,000g to render with it.
