vegas is still crashing.

So, this problem has been bugging me since I transferred to my new comp (2x 3.0 xeon + 16gb ram, vista biz 64)I'm using vegas 8c but had the same probs with vegas 8a. I would try 8.1 if i had it, but a little bird in my head tells me thats a lost battle.

at first i thought it was faulty raid controller since the old one was acting funny. now that i have a fresh one, the problem persists. I'm pretty sure its a vista 64 problem now but the doesn't help "fix" it.

basically, vegas is crashing during renders - usually when I have an "average" amount of effects( color corrector, tv simulator). the render usually crashes on the same frame( changing it up doesn't help). I'll also mention that I'm working in 32bit FP. i cant get anything done if it doesn't render and I hate having to transfer the project to my old p4 running xp just to get it to finish the render, which BTW, takes 3 hours compared to 10 minutes :O. If i have to, ill go back to 32bit xp, but that will suck b4llz.

any help will be greatly appreciated as it seems no one has an answer to this riddle. WTF sony! where's version 9?

Did you change the video prefreences in the new computer? I don't have Vegas on the laptop I'm writing on, but I think the main adjustment is for Video Ram or preview. Set to 512 to 728 Mb or as high as you can get away with. Also change number of threads in CPU to three instead of four. You've probably done those things, but sometimes easy to forget when setting up a new computer.

Also, try changing video render quality to draft or such if it's hanging and then move up from there. I just did that on a complex render and was able to get a demo to the client on time and it looked great. I haven't seen that much difference in render qualty between draft, preview, etc...

Let us know how the fix goes, I'd like to upgrade to a unit like that myself. Did you build it?

Hmm, so I had the rendering threads set to 4. set it to 3 and it crashed. set it down to 2 and it finally completed a successful render. thx for the help.

well, i see now its still crashing on longer, heavier projects. : /

I'm using Vegas Pro 8.0 versions a b c and am having similar problems. I have a Dell with an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.34 GHZ processor, 8 GB of ram, an ATI Radeon HD video card, running Vista 64 bit, and Vegas is crashing when the footage being rendered as a WMV 4 to 12 Mbps (I've tried all combinations of settings) file is longer than 1:30. Even to edit a minute of footage in 1920 1080 takes anywhere from 30 mins to an hour.
Granted all the versions of Vegas I've used (including Vegas Movie Studio 9) have been cracked... yet I've tried them all on my older computer with only a 2 GB ram and lesser processor, and am still getting crashes BUT when it doesn't I'm still getting the same slow rendering time.
I'm not having any problems or slow render times doing something like a 1080 uncompressed AVI file... but you can't really use a 20 GB video file.

Anyway, I thought this link to a similar thread might shed some light, or at least let you know you're not the only one with these problems.

I should have preferenced that by saying they're cracked, because after I bought a full copy of Vegas 8 the only computer I had it installed it on crashed, along with it's backup copy. The register info I had is usable on the "cracked" versions of Vegas 8 I've downloaded from torrent sites. However I only stole Vegas 9 to see if it was just a Vegas 8 problem on my computer. And yes I have deleted it since.

Btw Perrone I did the Crystal Mark test. Here are my results...

I found that when rendering with 2 threads, most of the renders complete...when i use 1 thread, i havent had a crash yet. so far so good.

with 2 threads going, not much of a differance. cpu use is like 75-85%. with 1 thread, cpu use drops to like 18-25% but renders still move pretty fast...even with 4 threads, vegas was never making full use of the 8 xeon cores.
