Vegas Interface Freeze,, Immediately after render.

Have been having a problem now for the past 3 days. Once i finish a render Vegas will lock up. If i play that file in media player. Note this. Only if i test the rendered file. But then any editor will render a file and want to test the results immediately right. What a funny software. It works perfect. I hit render immediately after the render. I hit open folder /open file. Whichever method. Same result. After playing the rendered file. Vegas will not respond. For a full 4 mins. I timed it. So everytime i finish a render i must give vegas time to rest. The whole interface just doest respond. Every thing else on the machine works. So the whole system isnt frozen. I minimize vegas and try other small progs etc. Everything normal. Maximize vegas. Hes still not wanting to respond. Then sudenly it will come out of sleep mode and the damn thing starts selecting different portions of the timeline Even though im not touching the right mouse button. Its as if the right mouse button is stuck so it starts high lighting all the clips as i just move the mouse around. Now im beginning to understand why no professional editing houses use this program. All this with 3 gb of ram. and a 3.4 ghz dual core proc. 3 sata drives. All this only immediately after a render. Once its played its pranks for 3 mins or so. Then it becomes a dream to work with. Then if it finishes a render it wont budge for 3 to 4 mins. Realllllly irritating.

When was the last time you re-installed windows? You might need to clean house, because I've never had this happen.

Ive not reinstalled windows for about a year. Same install since i got the machine. How would you suggest going about it. Remove os and reinstall ??. Any other tips ??

I have had this problem, but it was only with non-native container formats. For example, .mov h.264 files from my Kodak digicam.

So I have to ask: what kind of files do you have in your timeline? Vegas should not be having these problems with DV/HDV native files, but if you are trying some specific digicam files, divx, mov, etc, then you WILL have these problems, because Vegas is not optimized to use these formats/containers. It doesn't happen for all such files, but it does happen for a lot of them.

Normal DV Pal. Rendering to DVD architect template. This problem occurs with most normal files. On my system. Have you also had the sticky mouse problem thing. Like where its starts selecting your timeline as if you were holding onto the right mouse button ?

I've had mouse problems, especially multiple-selection, but they were mechanical problems in the mouse itself. You might want to try a different mouse.

If you find that the problem with the media player is only with WMP, then you might want to reinstall WMP.

Or, you might want to reinstall Vegas.

With normal DV just going to DVDA template, this definitely should not be a problem.

Hi David > yes just DV to DVDA widescreen template. But ofcourse resizing 4:3 into widescreen using cropping.

Not just the selection problem. It may not be the mouse. Because none of the drop down menus will work. Toolbar buttons will depress once the mouse is on them, But clicking on the icons doesn activate anything. No reaction. All this persists for about 5 mins. Then it will come out of this snooze mode and be back to normal. But its very irritating and does some seriously damaging things to the files on the time line by moving creating new selection patches etc.

Not just wmp. Even power dvd creates the same effect. But wait...if i dont play back my render or test it. Then its happy and doesnt do all this nonsense.

This definitely sounds like a memory allocation problem or a corrupt video driver. Have you loaded any new programs on the computer recently? Look at the virtual memory setting in the virtual memory area under performance. (system icon in control panel) and set to "system manged size." This allows windows more freedom to allocate free memory. Video is very memory intensive.

If you were using Vegas without issue and loaded new programs you could use window's restore feature to roll back the registry to a past time when the system was working. This will not effect data files but will eliminate an newly installed programs.

As a last resort you could try a Vegas uninstall/reinstall. And ultimately a Windows reinstall then Vegas reinstall if necessary.

Hmmm. If it's not the mouse (though I still suggest trying another one), then it sounds like a pretty serious Windows problem.

I'd suggest doing a system restore to a point well before you started having these problems. You won't lose any saved data files by doing it.

Might just be a hardware problem: faulty RAM chips. When you start encoding, the memory usage skyrockets. If part of your RAM chips are broken, you will get freezes.

But what I would suggest first is to re-install Windows and then Vegas, and be careful about viruses, spyware and other malware.

Alternatively, upload somewhere a small source footage of your camera (unmodified file, straight out of the camera) so we can test it on our machines too.

Eugenia > Faulty Ram....hmmm i dont know. Is there a ram test application within windows ?? It does a memory walk test etc if i remember..or any third party free applications which i may download to test the system. Im sure there must be something like that. How can one tell when the ram is faulty ? Please remm my freezes dont occur during render. They occur well after render , locking up the vegas interface for about 3 mins. Then it releases vegas and is able to function normally. Render has no problem. It renders in real time speed. Sometmes even faster.

Ubuntu has a bootable floppy that does a RAM test.

Anyways, re-install windows and be careful of malware. Check how much RAM you have when you render too.

Windows is holding the memory allocation for the video play back in Media Player then releasing it (freeing it ) after few minutes. There is a confilict with Vegas for the memory allocation.

When did this problem occur? What I mean is did it just happen out of the blue or did it happen after a Vegas upgrade, or the addtion of any other new programs or plugin additions?

It could be a bad ram chip but diagnosing this is not simple unless you have some experience. Also reloading Windows should be the last resort if possible. Try the restore feature first.

Do a virus scan and hard drive defrag for good measure and check your virtual memory and paging file settings under the System Icon in the control panel and then advance tab, then the setting button for performance. Set the performance option to "adjust for best performance" Click on the advance tab in the performance section as well . Click the change button in the virtual memory section and select "system managed" for the paging file size of you main hard drive, which I assume is C. Restart you computer. This gives windows more control of the memory and the and program performance.

If this does not help reinstall Vegas. If that's no good then you can decide to reinstall windows or get some professional computer repair assistance.

Hope this helps.

Scannon > No there was no upgrade done to vegas. I think im getting to understand what the problem is. Whenever i play a mpeg2 file in wmv player. It used to hog memory and even when i shut down. The processor fan would run aloud. So i had to ctrl alt del and shut down an instance of wmv player running in the background. Even though it wasnt on the screen anywhere. Then i installed the xp codec pack. And i think after that its been able to play most mpeg2s properly. But now i found that when i render and mpeg 2 alone. And play it back on wmv player vegas locks up as described.

I'd say so. Downloading "codec packs" is just asking for trouble unless they're from a reputable company like Matrox or MainConcept, etc..

Ok. But XP Codec pack is supposed to be safe. I think ive read some user reviews on here and on other sites etc. Its the KLite pack etc which is supposed to be a little tricky. XP Codec pack consists of most codecs needed to run with XP Pro. Safely. At least thats what ive understood reading a lot of reviews. But,,,,Heres the most important thing. Ive experienced this problem much before loading the xp codec pack. Then it stopped for awhile. Just before writing this i started vegas and found that the problem doesnt necessarily occur only after renders. I loaded a project and it started the same problem. Couldnt touch the timeline. The selection bar would run amuck as if im holding down the mouse button and selecting a region. Then after 5 mins its back to normal. The only reason im having to load codec packs is because otherwise mpeg2 files and renders which ive made dont run in wmv player ? So if i dont put in codecs, how do i get to see what ive rendered other than playing it agin inside vegas itself. Which again with its downscaled previews and preview artifacts etc wont be showing the actual results.

ok, here's what I suggest: re-install windows, and update to its latest version with the latest stable drivers. If you still get the same problems, buy another PC or another editor.

Buy another PC ?...:). Well that was sweet.
Hmmmm. I just built this machine about 6 months ago for about 2000$.
Do you think thats a reasonsable suggestion ?
It was working well so far and gives this problem only with certain projects.
I noticed this yesterday. It was giving the lock up problem only with a particular project. I tried alternating between other projects but it was freezing up only with the project in question. I understand your first suggestion. But buy another PC ?? wild huh. I dont think i can afford it.Not after what ive put into this system. Not considering software cost. Its a pentium d 3.4 ghz dual core, 3 gb ram, 3 x 250gb HDD @7200 rpm, nvidia card, etc etc. If this system cant do Vegas i doubt ill get another new pc that can. Unless that new pc is one of those hyper expensive workstations that cost above 4000$. In which case why would we need Vegas. You get professional systems like that with edius etc. Right ?
