Vegas Freezes When Monitoring

Firewire out to DV camera, DV Camera composite out to production monitor.

And all I can do is view single frames. (That's all I really need to do, when it comes right down to it, but...)

If I run the project, I just get a blue screen. If I let it run for more than a few seconds, Vegas freezes if I try to stop the preview. Forever, as far as I know. I have to turn of the DV cam to get it to unfreeze.

Are there settings somewhere to let the silly thing show the video on the monitor? Preview RAM is set to 384 with 2 threads. Setting it to 16 with 1 thread makes no difference.

Tried it with a Panasonic DV cam and a JVC. HAven't tried it with the DVX...and won't. Firewire paranoia. :)

(P4, 2 GB ram, video has NO CC or Track Motion. Cropped a little.)

If you can capture your video with the firewire on your computer, there shouldn't be an issue. Seperate animal from video hardware (or should be as far as the computer is concerned, even if on the same card). Please check your Preview Device settings in the Preferences. Mine doesn't like it when I do NOT have "Recompress edited fraems:" unchecked. Try also different synch offset settings. You have a ballsy enough system that is shouldn't be a problem. If you have access to other software like AE or Premiere, check to see if either of those is able to do it. Download a trail version if needed.

My computer acts squirrely from app to app. Vegas is always just a hair jumpier when previewing (except when the qualitys is set to Draft Auto) than other apps.

It shouldn't be a camera issue either. I record with my DVX, capture with a GL1, and run a broken Sony handycam for simple TV previews. Never so much as a hiccup as far as reliablitiy of the camera end.

Tried the different sync settings, and both checked & unchecked recompressed frames. :(

I hate it when this happens.

Hmmm. One thing I haven't tried, though. All this footage has been progressive. I'll give interlaced a go and see if that's an issue.

Good luck. Sorry I couln'd help. I don't think the progressive is going to change anything, but I hope I am wrong. Have you tried just playing a tape from a camera directly into your TV just to see if THAT works? I've had plenty of bad luck with playback and sometimes it's becuase I don't have the TV set up right. Does a DVD player work?

That just sounds odd. If it captures, it is talking to and controlling your camera through your firewire. it should output fine. What does your preview window do when you are trying to go to the TV? Does it go black too? Or does it continue to play the footage?

Maybe a simple reinstall of Vegas?

Black, with that "frames recompressed" message.

I'll try just playing a tape in the "interface" camera. That'll test that end of the equation. I've already tried two different cameras with no change, so we'll see if it's the monitor itself.

I really don't want to reinstall anything. I hate reinstalling things. :(

I had his problem a while back...turned out that my DirectX was messed up when I went from DX8 to DX9. Re-installed the Direct X file and all was well. This was after replacing the firewire card and cable to no avail.
Hope this helps.

Ah, well. Reinstalling DX9 did nothing. Shutting down realtime virus protection & firewall did nothing. Shutting down all the little doohickeys in the tray did nothing.

According to the harware device manager, there are no IRQ/mem address conflicts anywhere.

Interlaced or progressive makes no difference.

Playing a tape in the little cam works fine, so it's not the monitor.

Previewing on the Windows secondary device works fine.

Just seems to be something that can't process the firewire-out video fast enough to show up (that blue screen generally means no video input to the monitor), even as a jumpy useless series of images.

I'll try reinstalling Vegas (possibly going back to 6.0c as a test, too).

But not tonight. Sleepy baby, me.

Well.

Brainstorm here. I still had Vegas 5 installed, so I tried it. Worked perfectly, which told me there was nothing wrong with the computer, camera, or monitor for sure for sure.

Sigh. Uninstalled Vegas 6 and reinstalled it.

Everything works fine now. Must have been a glitch somewhere or a changed setting that I don't know I did.

I can now die a happy man. Or watch Miami Vice. Or something.

EDIT: Managed to break it again, but found the problem. The freaking ASIO driver or whatever it is. If I set the audio out to the on-board AC'97 , it works. But not with the 1010LT because it uses ASIO.

Now I just gotta find a new driver, I guess, if I want to see a "real" preview.
