http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/news/ShowRelease.asp?ReleaseID=642

"Responding to industry-wide demand for new HDV-enabled technology, Vegas 7 software offers full frame rate playback of native HDV on the Vegas timeline and includes improved memory for handling HDV 1080i longform projects. In addition, Vegas 7 software provides all the tools needed to edit proxy and full resolution HD and SD XDCAM MXF files natively without requiring further transcoding"

is that XDCAM MFX file the same at the hvx's mfx file? Please tell me its true!

That's understandable.

MXF is just a container format, just like AVI and MOV/QT. It's what's inside that matters, and of course Sony will support their own XDCAM technology before even thinking about Panasonic's DVCProHD.

It's more than that though. There are two distinct types of MXF files. There's Op-Atom, which is what Panasonic & Grass Valley & Avid and basically everyone else use, which splits all the elements of the files into their own individual "atoms" -- so audio is stored separately from video, separate from the thumbnails, etc.

Then there's Sony MXF, which is completely incompatible. Sony MXF is called Op-A1, and everything is contained all within one file.

Sony. Like No Other, once again.

"Sony. Like No Other, once again."..

yeah i forgot, sony does have a tendancy to... well, stick with sony. It's a shame because Iv'e gotten to like and work well with the vegas workflow. All i can do is hope for change or maybe some update or plugin... Edius supports panny's mfx format right? Anybody here use edius? Hows the workflow?

Edius workflow is sweet.
1. Shoot P2 (in my case, on 3 8gig cards)
2. In the field, Producer rotates cards for download into laptop. This is a Dual core machine with Edius Broadcast . We bring a 250 gig external USB2 drive for storage. At 720/30p that is over 7 hours I believe, don't quote me.
3. Once the files are loaded, Edius reads the MXF files like they were AVIs. We spot check shots for sound, color, framing, and continuity.
4. If we like what we see and hear, the cards are erased.

I believe FCP and others have to do an addional step of transcoding. If you have 6 hours worth of material like we do, that can be time consuming. With dual core or core 2 laptops we can start editting and organizing in the field immediately. Back in post, we edit directly from the external hard drive used in the field. This is an off the shelf LaCie 250g for $99 at PC Connection.

The laptop in the field workflow works great in "single location" setups. Much clunkier if shooting "Cops".

Edius 4 Broadcast also gives you access to the metadata from within the program itself, so you can see shooter information etc. at any time. P2 clips can be imported (copied) into your media bin, or they can simply be registered and uses in their current location (usually an external drive) -- the files are immediately usable and can be dropped into the timeline.

If you output back to P2, you again can set all the metadata, and the program will split your project as needed to fit the capacity of the P2 cards you have.
