VDSLR for more than run-and-gun/music videos/small time?

That means no, an epic is not to be shot with an VDSLR, lots of little movies perhaps, but an epic? Then I don't think so.

i agree, but since you're my arch nemesis

LOL! Funny funny stuff, comedy epic material I must say.

Well... the general idea of an Epic ANYTHING is just a big-ass idea. It's larger than life, hence the definition.

Most of the time it's about history, but honestly, I just played through Resident Evil 5 (Video Game, PS3) and it's pretty damned Epic. Much more engaging and cinematic than most of the stuff I've seen on the big screen. Although it did take place in Africa.

I think there are generally "ideas" that are involved, but they do not have to entail trips to Paris or anything like that. I'm pretty-damned-sure that you could craft an Urban Epic so long as you had the right idea.

There probably WILL be explosions, though. That's a very tricky topic, that Epic.

Bullshit!

You don't need big names....When Mad Max (road warrior) came out Mel Gibson was a nobody. It was shot for 300 grand and made 100 million.

I don't think shooting on the next generation DFSLRs is a compromise at all. I think it's an advantage over film. We're talking big budget looking films with complete creative control.

Well, I guess anything is possible of course. For myself I see the VDSRLs geared more towards TV stuff. Drama, crime, maybe even Disney stuff. Thats were my interest are for the future. But who knows what the future will actually bring.

exactly...big smartarse idea's......the kind of ideas (not mentioning any names) that people shoot down and say it can't be done. If that were true we'd still be living in caves.

we need raw to get good enough material for the big budget look though. it's really hard to grade compressed video gamma material in my experience. you can make it look cool, but not necessarily the way you wanted from the start. you gotta adapt to the material. with raw you got amost as much control as with film.

Yeah, that's what I meant in the beginning. I could only see it as one thing but now I think you could go far with it. But who really knows?

I just walked into a wall on set.

Star Wars, who the hell was Harrison Ford? =Epic.

Well lets add the Director to the mix for arguments sake. Big name director with lots of pull. Lets add there, for arguments sake, top of the industry set designers, special effects people, etc., etc. Amazing storytelling and million dollars king size promotion. I'll say that will make stars out of the newcomers.

Definitely Yes on this. Something close to uncompressed. RED got it right, man.

vision=epic

lol kholi

so matt you don't think a new 24p cam with the 5D's codec is epic worthy?

i think the 5d's codec is pretty good but it removes noise and texture, which causes banding when you tweak it. a high bitrate jpeg like codec would be better if raw is out of the question, like prores or dvcpro hd, or even mjpeg.

well I would be going to prores or similar in post. I mean as an acquisition format. Hopefully by the time I start pre-production DFSLR's will do something like 100Mbps but I'm just trying to decide on an acceptable baseline for resolution/dynamic range

i'm talking acquisition too. transcoding doesn't bring back any texture that's been lost in the camera. dynamic ange is actually reduced by the 5d compression. i mean it doesn't kill the shadows and highlights but it severely limits how much you can adjust the gamma before it breaks apart, for the reasons outlined above.

so if you had to shoot an epic and raw wasn't an option what would your baseline acquisition codec be?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned 28 Days Later...

That was an epic film shot on SD DV. ( Canon XL-1S )

Cooler than probably most films shot on HD, Film, or any other format.

As we always say, the tools don't make the project.

But DSLRs, DSMC, are the new 'new wave' tools, imo.

D90 is great, and is and has been used in good projects. Future generation models will be even better, unless they are made by Canon, as it might appear.

Very good point. Shutting down city blocks but they were shooting with mini-DV cams.

I mentioned it the other day. You could shoot that with a 5D, it would probably even look ok with a D90. not exactly an epic though imo.

I can shoot with any codec and make it a style but I probably wouldn't attempt a big budget style epic with anything less than maybe dvcpro hd. No mpeg for sure.
