VDSLR for more than run-and-gun/music videos/small time?

If you could shoot something EPIC but the only way you could do it was to use cheap cameras
if i wanted to shoot on the eipc i'd use the epic and if i wanted to use a cheap camera i'd use a cheap camera, and if forced to do otherwise i would reconsider the script and my way of shooting it. the camera is part of the film and if you replace the camera you don't have the same film anymore.

can you stop calling them vdslrs they're not video cameras! they're digital film camera's. except for maybe the GH1 it might look a bit video-like.

I meant EPIC not THE EPIC. Epic in Scope. Silly man.

A DFSLR gives me the ability to shoot something that would otherwise cost millions but will look like it did. We're talking 10km hikes in mountainous terrain and extreme weather for weeks.

If you're talking about documentaries, sure.

I think people could shoot a high-concept/epic/feature on the cheap using a mixture of cheaper cameras.

I know people have talked about mixing D90 footage and HVX/hpx/HMC footage but has anyone done it yet? Why not shoot an epic using different cameras and DFSLRs for different purposes?

Use the D90 for talking head scenes and closeups or minimal motion shots and use HVX's for moving/action shots with or without 35mm adapters. HVX no adapter for wideshots. D90 for low light and shallow dof. 5dMkii for 30p slowmo...probably better to use the HVX for slowmo.

They do it in major films right now even. They will shoot 35mm but then use HD cameras for pickups or transition shots. And shoot with the Red for VFX shots.

I don't think one of these cameras alone right now could shoot an Epic, but using them for each one's strengths could definitely give good results.

Two cents,
Andy

btw the idea that you would save money by shooting on dsrl is pretty absurd. the camera is such a small part of a film's budget, even indies, that it pretty much doesn't even count. dslr's can save a lot of money by allowing you to shoot in unorthodox ways but again that changes everything, it's not just less money spent.

video just makes me cringe, they shoot digital film or digital motion pictures. yeah you can call them whatever you want mine's called Lola.

I expect there will be an epic worthy DFSLR in 12 months
