VCR Mode Problem

I bought a used dvx100a which had 68 hours on it. it seemed fine when i bought it....but here is the thing. when i record something and put it in vcr mode, it doesn't show anything on the lcd (or vf). just blue. the IS playing, but nothing shows up on the screen. however, when i pop the tape in my cheapo sony camera, it's fine. which means obviously the dvx is recording everything fine, but something is wrong with the playhead.

i called tech support at panasonic and they recommended having the head cleaned, and so i did, at a pro place here in manhattan. i picked up the camera; they said the head was very dirty, and it played just fine. until...the next time i tried it!!!

my question: can this possibly be an issue that could progress into a more serious problem--like the camera eventually not actually recording images properly? i don't mind using my sony as a deck -- i always intended to -- or even using it for checking footage during a shoot.
is the recorder even directly related to the playhead??? am i in for huge repair costs down the line?

thanks guys!!
