There are a lot of misconceptions about the EX1 and definite issues with the camera that CCDs don't have. I've decided to make a series of tests of different areas of the camera for anyone who is thinking about buying it or the EX3.

With all due respect..... The numbers you were giving out on the Nikon flash test are not correct.
Those fractional numbers are power output.... not flash duration.

1/1 means full power. 1/32 means 1/32 of full power... not 1/32 of a second.

Typical flash durations of on camera flash units are very fast. Full power being around 1/1000 of a second and very low power can be as fast as 1/10,000 of a second.

Thanks for the testing. My question:

To what extent do these issues affect your everyday shooting with the camera?
Would you buy it again, now that you are aware of the issues?

These are important issues but I wonder what impact they have on day-to-day shooting. I can't think of the last time someone aimed a flash at or near me while I was shooting but maybe that's just because I don't do weddings and events. Same with running with the camera or making crazy pans. One can push any tech device beyond its limitations but that may mean nothing in everyday application.

I'm just trying to sort this out for a purchase decision.

Bob,

Only you can determine your needs in day-to-day shooting. Personally, I don't feel the camera encroaches on my needs one bit. Others find it totally inappropriate for their style of shooting.

Once the issues are pointed out and demonstrated, it's up to you to make the best decision you can.

I'm aware of the issues but I don't shoot with the EX1 any different than I normally would with a CCD camera. Skew/non-global CMOS shutter are non-issues for me considering all of the benefits of this camera. I would without a doubt buy it again.

Now, do I wish these issues didn't exist? Yes. But from my standpoint as mainly a documentary/event shooter I'd rather have good lowlight capability and long recording times compared to the HVX200 or other HDV cameras.

When this camera hit the market and I heard that it solved three of my biggest issues with prosumer HD (Resolution, recording time and lowlight sensitivity) I knew this was it for me. I was even happier when I found out the audio circuitry is phenomenal and the MPEG-2 codec was much improved. The 1/2" chips, more than decent internal stereo mic and smaller data requirements (my 750GB hard drive filled up fast with HVX200 footage) didn't hurt either!

I'll take all those features over some occasional skew, infrared and half-frame flashes any day!

No problem! I too was worried about the negative sides of this camera and performing these tests hopefully helped shed a lot of light.
 
be interested to see tests done on faster shutter speeds as well as setting the camera to 24 progressive. and there is also a shutter speed frequency on these cameras too i think...i am hoping to pick mine up monday to shoot a feature movie with it...as far as the skewing goes...it wouldnt matter if you were filming someone running down the road past fences. they would just look crooked with the rolling shutter..no one would be the wiser...the shake test looked fine.. everything blurs on all cameras anyway unless you set the shitter too high... red carpet events would be another issue.. id say id just use my xl2 still for those. as they are mostly close up interviews...great work with the tests though. its good to see the issues...
