Varicam HDC27H not getting any signal to Nanoflash.

Hey guys, so I got a Panasonic HDC27H and want to record with HDSDI out to Nanoflash.

The NF says "No source" on the display. Taking the SDI signal out of the "EE" SDI port but also tried the HDSDI MON port with no success. Have the switch on "EE" position so it sould always output a signal from the EE port no matter what but NF still says No source.

I tried two SDI cables, wondering if they are defect or if it is a setting in the 27H or NF that I'm missing?!? I definitely have the NF source on "SDI" and couldn't find any other setting that would do something.

I'm using two high quality Belden HD-SDI cables, I have no way of testing them with anything else at the moment but will try to source a SDI monitor later to try. They're brand new though, can't imagine that both cables would be defect...

Am very grateful for any help!

In the meantime I have borrowed another SDI cable and another SDI monitor. Camera works like a charm and my cables are also fine, it's definitely the Nanoflash acting up.

I have set the Varicam to output in every possible setting and NF set to receive SDI and tried all possible settings there are, no luck...
Don't know what else to try... anyone? Mitch?

Hi Mitch,

I know but I thought more of asking you because you may know if the HDC27 needs setup in a specific way to get it to work with the NF,.
Anyways I have been in contact with CD for several days and they have been very helpful so far. I've done all the testing possible from my side and at the moment it looks like it all boils down to a defective SDI input on the nanoflash.

Bum SDI on the Nano would be where I'd lean, too. Aside from the paint menu, the 27 is a fairly simple camera, especially compared to today's. And the Nano, while having record options, etc. that could be changed, it was more or less plug-n-play. The only thing I thing I set on it besides the date was bit-rate, codec, embedded audio, and trigger.

After reading through the manual and looking through the menu several times that's what I figured too. The signal should always be there, there is no option to switch the SDI output on or off besides the physical "EE" switch. Just wanted to make sure there isn't some secret setting or something I have overlooked, real bummer, I got all the bits and pieces here and can't shoot, although I have tape, I don't have a deck so no point using it right now.

Hey Marc,

I am a proud owner/operator of a 27H myself. I have some advice to throw your way although it may not be the idea you'd want to go with. In my little over 2 years now of owning the 27H and using nothing but HD-SDI recorders (ive used the hyperdeck shuttle, atomos ninja sdi blade, and aja kipromini) i can tell you that the AJA KiProMini is the BEST recorder to pair with our varicam model. Works like a charm and you are able to frame ramp and playback in real time as well which is a big creative plus for me. All said and done, my advice to you is to sell your nanoflash and get a kipromini, you will not regret it. Also, per my understanding, the nanoflash encodes to some bogus MPEG2 sony codec correct? KiPro has ProRes or DNxHD 10bit 4:2:2.. Just a thought. If you have any other questions about the varicam, feel free to get in touch with me via mike_krumlauf@icloud.com. I am not on here much but i reply quick to emails. Happy Shootings :)

Hi Mike,

sorry I'm not on here that often anymore either, just noticed your reply now.

I was able to send the NF back to the seller as both the SDI input was defect as well as a dead onboard battery, none of which the seller mentioned on ebay. I bought a CD Odyssey 7Q+ the other day because I also need something relatively compact that can record 10bit 4K for my GH5. Just getting started testing out different settings and so on, at least it works now.

Maybe we should compile a FAQ or something with both our findings.
