hello there, soon I've 2 lenses ,panasonic 12-35mm and 35-100mm f:2.8 ,Both of them are 58mm filter thread.I want to buy
a variable nd filter. Some people are saying "buy a bigger one and use step down adapter because of vignetting and also
for future plans if I buy a lens with bigger filter size."
But probably I wont buy a lens with bigger filter size.So I just dont know if I buy 58mm variable nd for these lenses, will vignetting be a issue for me? If yes ,what size I should buy to avoid vignetting ?
Thanks ,have nice day.

If you're for sure not going to be using different lenses in the foreseeable future, save the money and get a 58mm. But if you're thinking about using other lenses, even borrowing or renting for use, and will want to use the ND filter with them, then a 77mm should do you just fine, with an 82mm being the absolute safest (and most expensive) way to go.

For that pair of lenses consider standard 58mm NDs instead of a Variable, & use Xume Adapters so they can be quickly attached, or swapped. They'll fit inside the OEM hoods, & keep the package compact.

Thanks for your advices. So you are both saying ,58mm nd or variable nd filters wont make any vignetting.I will look at xume adapters.
Thanks.

If I use 77mm ,probably I cant use lens hood.Is there any solution for this situation? Maybe even buying a 77mm lens hood may not solve this problem?

I have a 58mm Heliopan Vari-ND that I carry as backup to my solid NDs. When mounted to Xume Adapters it causes a slight vignette at the wide end of the 12-35/2.8, but without the Xume it does not.

What Bern said. I have a 77mm vari nd on Xume adapters for the Panasonic dynamic 2.8 zoom duo. Can't use the lens hoods, and the 77mm filter is pretty heavy for the magnets of the Xume's to hold on. A little jarring and the filter has popped off more than once. It sseems to be stressing the magnetic capacity of the filter adapter.
