Variable Framerates to Firestore?

Couldn't find the answer so I figured I'd ask....is this going to be supported or is it strictly for P2 media only?

Thanks!

From what I can gather so far, it will record like on DVCProHD tape, at 60fps. Altough I certainly hope not! It would be a collosal waste of space.

Oh! Sorry! You wanted more?

Yes, it's true that Firestore announced support for DVCProHD, but was not clear on how it will store the frames. If they follow the specs, and reference the tape storage as a paradigm, then whatever frame rate you shoot, say 720p24 for example, it will be embedded in the 60fps stream. If they follow the P2 paradigm, then whatever frame rate you shoot at will be the frames stored (hopefully).

It's up to the NLE to extract the needed frames. It's kind of analogous to DVX 24P's pull down process.

As for 1080i, there is no magic there, it should be plain and simple.

I think you guys are missing my point a little.....I don't care how it stores it. I just want to know if I could recored at say. 22 frames per in 720P on the firestore. Those kind of variable frames rates....not 24P and 30P. See what I am asking?

Peace!

Sorry for not being clearer. The Varicam has variable frame rates, yes? But how does it record it to tape? In a 60fps stream! I merely stated 24fps as an example, but anything from 4 to 60 will do.

It's just the way it will record it to disk that is still unknown. Will it record X fps as discreet frames like on P2? Or will it record it embedded in a 60fps stream. Check out the Varicam PDF brocure for more info on how it records to tape.

Or am I still missing the point?

Flintstone,
Are you saying that if I record at say.....12fps that the stream might be 60fps with only 12 unique frames? That does seem wasteful but at least it is an option. I basically want to know if I skip P2 cards initially will I be missing out on this cool feature which is essentially the equivalent to overcranking or undercranking a film camera.

It would be easier to understand the necessity for 60fps stream to a tape. But on a hard disk I would think it would be the same as P2. We'll have to wait and see!

Thanks!

Yes, it does seem wasteful, and I do hope they don't implement it like on tape. I guess we'll know soon enough.

For me, it's a given, a Firestore type device is a must. I may get a set of small P2 at first for interviews and studio shots, but for events... Nothing beats a firestore.

On tape, that's how it would be done, yes -- 12 unique frames, each repeated four times (so each unique frame appears five times), thus the sequence is rounded out to 60.

Whether the FireStore will do that, or will have intelligence to remove duplicate frames, remains to be seen. I strongly encourage them to develop it to record only the active frames -- doing so would let it record over four hours of 720/24p.

If it does end up recording the full 60p stream, you'd just then have to use a frame-rate-conversion tool in post to strip out the duplicate frames. In either case, yes, you will be able to take advantage of variable-frame-rate recording on the FireStore and also on the P2 cards. The question is whether the FireStore records only active frames.
