Hi, im really sorry to post if this is already posted, but i cannt for the life of me find a tutorial on how to put either fast motion (12fps) or slow motion (60fps) into my 720 24p timeline in FCP and make it work.

Its 5am , so excuse the frustration, been trying to do it all night. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

killed a pack of cigarettes already...

Anyways, in a detailed explanation...

I know how the HVX can shoot 720 24p at 60fps per second to make a super slow motion look, or 12fps to create a fast motion look like a steven segal action seen. LOL.

but when i import the clips into FCP from the P2 card, and put them in my timeline, an easy setup 720p 24p timeline, they just play at real life speeds, but choppy for some reason. fully rendered and what not

Im using The Final Cut Studio 5.1 apps, FCP 5.1 and what not, on a 2.0ghz Intel Macbook Pro 15.4 inch.

Any help would be nice, and ill put my flame shield on now , incase this was asked already, probably was :( sorry, but atleast redirect me to the post if it was. Thanks alot, and appreciate any help!

This might be your problem. I assume you've watched the footage off the P2 card and it is shot correctly (fast or slow motion) . Look in your browser and see if the clips vid rate column says 59.94 or 23.98. If you shot at 720 24p the camera stilll records at 59.94 and you have to remove the extra frames. Use the frame rate converter in the tools menu. If its not there look in the extras folder in the 5.1 installation disc and install it.
To avoid this shoot in the 24 pn format so you will not have to go through this.

i did not watch the footage from the P2 yet, but i will when i get back from getting my DS! :) thank you, and i thought 24pn wasnt good for FCP 5.1 .

Also, when i import from P2 in FCP, should i uncheck the remove dup. frames/advanced pulldowns button?

We've covered this one on a few threads. If you are importing under/overcranked footage into FCP for use with the FRC, UNcheck the remove dup frames. Let the FRC remove the necessary frames. I can assure you that it works like a charm in FCP 5.1.1

1- Check the remove dup. frames box when ingesting P2 footage. This removes extra frames to make it conform to what you shot, 720p24.

2- For clips you used the Scene setting to change to alternative frame rates, AFTER you ingest WITH the remove dup. frames option, highlight the clip in the browser, go to Tools > DVCPRO-HD Frame Rate Converter, set your options, go. This removes the REST of the added frames to conform it to the correct frame rate (12, 60, whatever).

So, 1st step takes if from 60fps to 24fps. 2nd step takes the 24p to the alternative frame rate you shot with. Simple as that.

And as stated before, if you have FCP 5.1, the Frame Rate Converter does not automatically install. It is in the Extras folder on the Install disk. If you are on 5.0.4, you can still use the FRC, too!

I have followed the documentation of the FRC and not removed the dupe frames on ingest. So, it comes into FCP as 59.94 but in the FRC pulldown menu I select 23.98 for output. I guess it's the same thing and haven't tried it using Ben's method of removing the dupes at ingest. I can't imagine why it wouldn't work but I'm such a literalist... if the docs say don't remove the dupes I just take it at face value.

There is some confusion as to if you need to NOT do the pulldown on ingest or not. I've gotten mixed results, but am experimenting with this today. I have to write up a paper on it, so I have to solve the mystery. Do you skip step 1 when ingesting alt frame rate clips? I think so. But like I said, I've gotten mixed results.

Please do post your write up here when you are done, it will be a great peice of information. Just finally solved you know what i mean?

Thanks again

VERY NICE FOOTAGE! Water looks better than his tricks ! :) J/K but thanks for the link, keep them coming!

I'm running 5.1.1 on a MBP and I found the download version you listed above wouldn't work with that version when I tried it a while back, I had to use the one that came on the original discs. Maybe I just installed it wrong but if anyone has a similar problem trying that download version it may not be current for 5.1.

ya its not showing up in my FCP 5.1 on MBP. Sucks because i dont have the discs here for my copy. Its locked up wherever the bossman keeps the stuff. anyone have their version for 5.1 they can send me pwwweeease :)
