Variable Frame Rate Playback?

On P2 when you shoot something in an "off" frame rate like slow mo, can you preview the clip on the camera in slow motion? If I shot at higher than 30p, can I view it as it would be seen on a 24p or 30p timeline in slow motion, or will it playback realtime?

I think it would be incredibly cool to have an option to view as if in a 24, 30, or 60 fps timeline.

Anyone hear anything about this?

Maybe better to sum this up by asking if anyone knows how we will be previewing the variable frame rates in camera?

Good question. I would assume that you can play back a clip that was shot at any of the frame rates at either 24 or 30, but really, I am just guessing (this would be great as you would be able to preview the effect on set).

I think that the feature set should be nailed down, but I doubt that we are going to get much in the way of advanced information prior to the camera's release.

D'oh! That was one of my questions to ask Jan at RESFest and I totally forgot. Did anyone else think to get the information?

I remember hearing something about shooting 60p on the P2 cards then down converting it to Mini DV in 24p, in the camera, and it would do the slow-mo effect. At least that's what I remember reading here. If it can do this then I don't know why it wouldn't be able to do it in playback.

U guys may be over analyzing this.... remember when you shoot on a P2 card, its already in digital file format. Why would you want to put it back onto tape?

Just my 2 cents.

One would think you could just bring the digital files into your NLE of choice and go edit!

He was mentioning that you can do HD -> SD downconversion, to tape, right in the camera. That's nice because even if you're just using the HVX for SD material, you can still take advantage of the variable framerate functionality... something that's not offered on any other SD camera anywhere near this pricepoint.

I don't think anyone else has been "putting footage back to tape" except in the archive scenario; yes, you "bring the digital files into your NLE of choice and go edit!" but when you're done, you have to store that footage somewhere. You can't keep saving your projects to your hard drive - eventually it's going to run out of space. That's where the discussion comes in (and there have been several) about what the best format is to store your source material after you're done editing. It's probably going to be different for everyone, especially right out the gate. I'm planning to use DVD-R DL from the outset, and hopefully a Blu-Ray solution or something of the like will present itself within the next year or so.

ahh. gotcha my mistake... As for Archival I would agree, not tape, but some sort of DVD medium. I have been storing my archives on DVD-r for the past 4 years now. Its a pain cause they only hold a little over 4.2GB, but thats a bit of footage if its DV25.

I know the Varicam cannot preview off speed shots, you have to view them in post.

If the HVX can playback off speed at off speed, then that's just another feature that puts it above the varicam.

BTW, wouldn't preivewing at off speed be in industry first? Are there any other cameras that do that?
