Variable Frame Rate Help Please

OK... I'm finally getting around to playing with VFRs on my HVX.

I have recorded some overcranked 720p material onto my FS-100, imported it from the media tool and now I would like to post it on my Avid (Xpress Pro 5.7.2).

So far I'm not having much success. Could someone please post the correct workflow so I don't write off another day with nothing to show for it...

Thank you!

Kind of depends on whether you shot your VFR material in 720pN mode or 720p mode. Avid will only recognize variable frame rates shot in 720pN mode, at least with file-based media. When capturing off a tape that contains Varicam-acquired footage, Avid will conform that captured media to the project's frame rate. If you shot in 720p mode, then, you'll need to process the files elsewhere to conform the footage to your project's frame rate, and then import. Sad, but true.

That said, if you shot 720pN with the FS-100, you're in for a special flavor of hell. Unless something changed with the 5.7+ releases, the 720pN files off the FS-100 will require some "manipulating" in order to get them to play. Maybe this was fixed, though--haven't tried native-frame rate footage from the FS-100 in awhile.

Thanks for the reply cbrougham, :)

Guess this is my "flavor of hell" at the moment...

What kind of manipulation are we talking about here?

Thanks for the help!

As I said, I've not played with the native modes in the Firestore in awhile, but what I and many other users experienced was a AUDIO_INSUFFICIENT_MEDIA error when attempting to play the native-mode clips in the Avid. I don't know if this is still an issue with the newer releases of the Avid software, but if it is, my workaround is posted here. It's clunky and a pain but if the error pops up, you can get around it with this method. If you don't see the error, though, you're golden.
