Vari ND + Zeiss 21mm

Hello filmmakers!

If anyone owns or has had experience with the Singh Ray Vari ND and the Zeiss ZE/F/K 21mm prime on a 5D Mark II, can you please let me know if there is vignetting?

P.S. I am speaking of mounting the 82mm Vari ND to the 82mm front thread of the lens.

Thanks!

From the alternative lens forum over at Fred Miranda:

"[FONT=Verdana, sans-serif]The Vari ND come in 82 mm but they are 14mm thick. This will certainly vignette on a WA lens like the Zeiss 21. They don't make a 10mm "thin"version, but even if they did, I think there might easily be some vignetting.

As you indicate Singh Ray does not make a Vari N Duo (Vari ND plus CP) in 82mm, but if they did it would be too thick for the Zeiss 21. One of the reasons they may sell the Vari-ND in an 82 so folks with WA 77mm lenses could use them with a step up ring to get around some of the vignetting problems. "

So I can say FOR SURE there is no vinetting, but there is DEFINITELY some edge distortion that occurs when the Vari-ND is applied.

I can say that I almost thought there was something wrong with my BRAND NEW 21mm, but once the ND was removed the distortion went away.

You can use it if the shot is intended to be a static, but if there is going to be any panning you may wanna re-think the choice of lens to use on that shot.

Yep, you can't use a variable-ND on a lens that wide. It just won't work (in polarized daylight) because the angle of view is too wide, so the polarizing filter foundation of the vari-ND causes differing levels of darkening across the field of view.

vari-ND's are for medium to tele lenses, but not for wides.

Depends on what camera you're using it on. The bigger the sensor, the wider the field of view, and the more the polarizing effect comes into play. So if you were asking about using the vari ND on the 21mm on a 1/2" sensor camera I'd say "no problem". But if you want to use it on the 21mm on a 5D, I would think you'd have a huge problem.

It all depends on the field of view that you're getting out of the lens. I could do some testing on a 7D but that wouldn't really help you all that much if you're trying to gauge its usefulness on a 5D.

Well, you could test with a ~13mm lens.

True. Buy me one and I'll do it! :)

Widest I have is the 18mm, or the Nikon 17-35 zoom. Or the Peleng 8mm, but no way would the filter go on that.
