Vancouver/Vancouver Island

Hi there,
what`s about jobs at Canadas westcoast/BC? I am running a video&audio studio in Germany since 15 years and thinking about Immigration to Canada, although business is ok here, but I love that country so much. Having some experience in producing more than 150 (classic) CD? s with ProTools and lots of top microphones, I am equipped with DVX100, Dual-G5 2.0, FCP HD.
Do you think there is a realic chance to survice with my family over there? This summer we´ll visit VC Island and I would be happy to meet anybody there.
Thanks for responding
Robert

Re: Vancouver/Vancouver Island

Hey Robert,

I live in Vancouver, BC but I'm just starting out in my career here. Haven't gone too far yet but there is certainly business here if you look for it.

I'm sure you will survive but I wouldn't expect to find lots of clients right away. I think it takes time to establish one's business.

It's a nice place for sure!

Re: Vancouver/Vancouver Island

I thought there supposed to be some jobs because of the movie-productions and industry for Hollywood etc. I`ve got an article about Vancouver as movie city nr. 2 in the world (behind Australia last year or Hollywood normally).
But your response sounds as if you have to look for the jobs intensively.
No chance as temporary subcontractor or editing jobs? I heard the same description of a friend who is leaving Vancouver now as a Motion and Shake-freak. He got only 8-10 CAD/hour for working on 3D-animation jobs. He told me that he gets better payment in Australia or South Afrika. Too bad, I want to sattle down in Vancouver or stay in Germany... You can`t imagine how hard it is to get immigration as skilled worker without possessing a job. But no job without immigraton and Canadian experience....
Enjoy your day,
Robert

Re: Vancouver/Vancouver Island

I lived in Victoria and Vancouver, Its difficult when your just starting out, unless your really skilled in your field I:E animation - or what ever with credits to back them. When I lived there it was pretty expensive, I think it's probably normal when compared to Toronto / New york / Los Angeles. Victoria doesn't have very much in the way of jobs, I think they get a couple location shoots a year. At least that's what it was when I lived there. Vancouver is definetly better but it's still a who you know, or get out and push yourself market.

Re: Vancouver/Vancouver Island

I live in Seattle and sometimes do some work in Vancouver BC. I have gotten to know some professionals there. It is pretty much like Hollywood North. If you got the skills and resume then it's the place to be.

For those who are just getting started I would equate it to the pretty drama student from Kansas moving to LA to become a big movie star. You're a little fish in a big pond. Gonna get eaten alive and be doing "blue movies" in 6 months.

PS-It is absolutely gorgeous there. Also, the cleanest big city you will ever find. If I thought I could be as successful up there, I would move tomorrow. :)
