Van Helsing

Dang it I hate to fess up but I liked it too Matt. Not a bunch but just enough, four out of my five adult children hated it but I have one who'll tolerate it with me. I like the CG Jeckyl/Hyde character and though the film is both silly and stupid I somehow found something to like in it(don't ask me to pinpoint it). While I'm blaspheming I may as well fess up, I didn't like "The Thin Red Line" even though I love war films. I also hated all but the first ten or fifteen minutes of "28 days Later". I don't like "Citizen Kane" and several of the other so called classics. I seldom watch a movie twice unless I really like it and then only when I'm in the mood for it. I may never give Van Helsing a second viewing(I have the dvd though I watched it at the theatre) I was mildly entertained. I suppose my expectations were not as high as some others here.

I remember Basil Rathbone's and Vincent Price's many "B" movies that were simply entertaining, not examined in a microscope. We really don't have that many horror films to watch these days so while I don't group "Van Helsing" in with my all time great films there might be some dark stormy night when the grandkids are here that I pull it out and watch it again(it certainly won't scare them). The movie is more like "Shrek" than like "Frankenstein meets the Wolfman" which is what I expected. The amount of buzz about this movie created a lot of the disappointment in it.

It's a good thing Kate didn't get killed off early in the film. She's the only reason I watched the whole thing.

Hehehe. That and David Wenham. I found his part amusing after seeing im in Lord of the Rings.
