Validity to GH2 first batch being bad and getting fixed

There's been a lot of conjecture and rumors about this first batch of GH2's as being somewhat bad and that Panasonic is going to be fixing it or such. If that's the case and I'd get a new one that's fine, but it would be nice to know if there's confirmed info on this or if it's just a bunch of malarky. I've not had any issues with the Gh2 but I did buy the first set, on the bleeding edge. Never had an issue before doing this, but it would be nice to know so I don't miss the boat... Again this isn't to flame something, but to decipher the info and figure it all out.

cheers all.

The only "confirmation" that would matter would come from Panasonic, and as far as I know, there has been none. Everything else is rumor and speculation.

I got my hands on a fresh post-christmas batch 2 days ago, still had the banding issue. So as far as I'm concerned, if it's being fixed it hasn't happened yet.

I think this comes from another thread, where someone spoke to Panasonic direct about delayed shipment and was told that a fix was the reason for the short supply.

The source (at Panasonic Direct) might be more credible that one might at first think - people within an organisation do often get to hear internal rumours and gossip and sales staff, being on the periphery as it were, are perhaps not as concious as they should be about the effects of passing snippets on to customers.

Thus, while a service technician might know, but would never say, a sales droid might also 'know' (at least *something*) but might be more likely to pass it on - particularly if it helped their own job of explaining to irate customers why their cameras have not yet materialised.

For myself - I posted ages ago that I thought that the first release was done to meet the Christmas sales opportunity, perhaps in the full knowledge that the cameras had a problem.

Again, that's just my view - but it's why I cancelled my own GH2 when it was in stock.

The other question is, *would* Panasonic cynically release GH2's that they knew had problems, just to achieve a pre-announced deadline?

Sadly, I think they would - but, again, only my own opinion.

It would be useful to get a handle on the serial numbers so that production dates could be established, like the GH1.

or the fact that companies often have rigorous, but rigid, testing procedures that might not be able to produce all possible combinations of potential problems and the banding issue was not seen until people started to report the issues?

(shrug) who knows?

I based my own decision on the fact that Vitaliy, months ago in his interview with 43 Rumors, stated that he'd heard that Panasonic were having some sensor decelopment problems.

Then the GH2 announcement was, apparently delayed , then came more rumors of production delays.

Then came the first cams bang on schedule, and almost immediate reports of banding and other sensor related issues.

Perhaps I put 2 & 2 together and came up with 5, or perhaps not.

Either way, I intend to get a GH2 (unless Sony come up trumps with a Nex7) but I'm happy to wait and see what happens.

nah they are talking about that strange blue banding in the shadows, not posterization from 8 bit codecs.

I've been really happy with the GH2. Just seems to be a lot of rustling about and people commenting and such. If there is a problem then course I'll send it back but for now, I"m really happy with the purchase.

Today I used the free RAW image converter that comes with the GH2. Works like a charm.

People will tend to gripe. If your's is fine, well...you may just have a truly amazing camera, unimaginable only 3 years ago.

I think you guys make yourself crazy with conspiracy theory. No evidence for any of this junks! Berry Green didn't say either! Relax everybody! Gh2 is nice! No broken batch! Omg!

Why does it seem that every new camera, camcorder, almost any piece of new electronics is greeted by 'gee, I've heard rumors that the first batch is defective'.

I don't buy it...I buy the camera, but not the 'rumors'.

PD says the back orders of the GH2 are due to everyone choosing the black body; it has nothing to do with banding issues. The silver body is readily available from PD. Switching orders is verifiably working to insure fulfillment.

So I ordered my camera on Jan 31 from a California company who said they just got 4 in on Jan 26. I am supposed to get it on Feb 8.

Now, the other company I pre-ordered with just called me today and said they are getting cameras in next week (Im not canceling my other preorder until I receive this camera to make sure it's right and it works).

SOOO ... should I just keep the one that I am going to get in 4 days or should I pass to receive a model that would have cleared shipped from Panasonic in Feb 2011?? What do you guys think the odds that the Feb shipment would have fixed the banding issue are?

I just don't want to shoot myself in the foot here, but I definitely don't want a camera that messes up when you shoot at 1/50 in low light. 1/50 is the standard speed and shooting in low light in the purpose of SLR cameras. I seen just about every piece of footage on the internet and it all looks great. TONSSS of footage in low light with no banding issues, but it only takes a handful of band videos to freak you out.

Do you guys think I should just be fine with shooting at 1/30 or 1/40 in low light? (I know I plan to experiment immediately, but just wanted your expert opinions.)

Thanks.

Thanks mpg. As it turns out, I have the chance to get two. If anyone is interested in paying me $1,199.99 for the Black GH2 14-42, I'll get the second one as well, and sell it to you.

Let me know. Email me.
