Just had a play with new V2.38 FS700 firmware at Broadcast Asia in Singapore today. The menus were updated with full 4K options and S-log2 capability. It was difficult to judge live FS700 pictures with the new firmware, but it all looked release-ready and worked. Alistair Chapman was doing 4K presentations in the Sony stand. His F55 4K tornado footage really did look amazing with the Resolve grade he had done. What really impressed me was Alistair's Singapore footage which he demonstrated the grade-ability of RAW footage shot with the Sony raw recorder. It was truly amazing comparing what could be pulled back from an over-exposed shoot. (will help me no end!)
The FS700 with adaptor, AXS-R5 and battery looked incredibly long and cumbersome; way longer then a 2/3" camcorder with a long lens. I can't see how this will be practical in the field. I'm hoping the Odyssey option will be a more compact choice, but all of this is making the FS700 a very expensive solution.
Panasonic was showing the new Varicam ("Coming Soon!") but I thought I saw that sign a couple of years ago
rogar-Thinking(DBG The camera has 12-stop DR and an OLED VF, but seems to be a lot wider and larger than a traditional 2'3" shoulder-cam. I can't see this camera taking off except for specialist broadcast use.
There was a ton of Chinese exhibitors at the show from huge cranes to a myriad of LED lighting solutions. Most of the names I hadn't heard of, and I would be hesitant to purchase without decent reviews or word-of-mouth recommendations. China is obviously making big inroads into camera support gear, so it's going to be a learning experience on both sides.
The new Flanders Scientific 32" monitor was there and will start shipping next week. Although not 10-bit, the images looked gorgeous and better to my eye than the new 24" 10-bit panel. Sometime size does matter.
