V1U HDMI Out

Couple of questions about the HDMI Out feature of the V1U...

1) The HDMI output is being labeled a 'poor man's HD-SDI,' but what does that mean exactly? Can it handle less throughput that HD-SDI, will there be noise, will the 'uncompressed' specs still get somewhat compressed?

2) Black magic has its new Intensity card. It is perfectly suited for this. So if I were to capture V1U HDMI out using the Intensity am I truly capturing 1920x1080 4:2:2 60p, or does any of that break down/get converted during the workflow?

cheers.

That is a very good question and it could play a major role on the decision of many people.

Where are you getting 1920x1080 4:2:2 60p from?

Intensity will do: 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 720p30, 720p59.94, 720p60

I PRESUME that the sony cam will output full frame 4:2:2 in the above formats- if it doesn't then it's a deal killer.

4:2:2 HDMI will be every bit as high quality as 8bit 4:2:2 over HD-SDI .. digital is digital, when you're talking the same # of bits.

1920x1080 4:2:2 60p are the figures quoted for what the camera is shooting uncompressed. This is what I imagine you would be tapping into if you were going HDMI out from camera. So wondering if that is correct, w/ the HDMI out, in theory, is that what is being sent out from camera. If so, then is there a way to capture the signal in that format (will the Intensity do it for example)?

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks Barry. I'll be interested to see both the HDMI output footage and the tapeless footage.

cheers.

Thanks for the clarification, Rawfa. Yes that's via HDMI. Via analog it's probably equivalent, via firewire it's 1440x1080x4:2:0 in MPEG-2 HDV compression.

No problemo, boss

So, the HDMI out is before hdv compression (?)

It's bound to be I would think .. but I don't know if it's been stated explicitly? It would be a bit of a deal-killer for a lot of people if it's post-compression.

Do remember as well that the camera's chips are 960x1080- the 1440 width will be reached by interpolation.

According to the diagram in their e-brochure, yes the HDMI bypasses HDV compression. It goes through a "resolution conversion process" (aka downrezzing) to 1440x1080x4:2:2 and that's what gets output over HDMI.

Every indie-budget HD camera does atleast "some" kind of interpolation (call it pixel-shift or whatever) so a warning like that is misleading. Tends to make people think its just this camera that interpolates.
