yo kids...

For "V DETAIL FREG" Wat does wat... THIN? MID? THICK? Which is best for wat settings? I know in 60i its set as "THIN"! For 24P , 24PA or 30P which should it be set toooo? does it matter?

Re: V DETAIL FREG settings?!?

If you're playing your footage on an interlaced television, the safe setting is THICK (or MID if you don't mind a little interline flicker and you want a little higher resolution). If you're using your video for web video, computer video, or playback on a Plasma or LCD TV, set it to THIN, with the understanding that if you play THIN footage back on a television it may very well flicker (which can be fixed in post as well).

Re: V DETAIL FREG settings?!?

If users will have various types of TVs (ie, general public), do you go for the lowest common denominator -- THICK?

Re: V DETAIL FREG settings?!?

In Vegas you go to the clip properties and choose "reduce interlace flicker". That way you can keep maximum resolution for your projected version, and then make a second flicker-reduced versio for DVD release.

Re: V DETAIL FREG settings?!?

after extensive testing, i mean very extensive testing, and after discussing with Barry, and after making other extensive testing, the best results for me is with THIN vdetail setting.
Avoid THICK.
MID has a little edge enhancement and it keeps all the 480 lines, the same as THIN, but there is some visible edge enhancement.
THICH has much less resolution.

With THIN, it doesn't flicker any more than any rented progressive (film) DVD.

Re: V DETAIL FREG settings?!?

If there is no verical lowpass filtering (say in "thin mode") and when displaying a non processed interlace signal (CRT), interline flicker is allways present. The visibility depends on the screen brightness and the relative screen dimensions. Some CRT displays have a spot focus behavior in the highlight area's (blooming) which automatically introduces filtering and thus reduces interline flicker in the critical area's (hightlights)

Re: V DETAIL FREG settings?!?

Interesting... I've never actually used the thin setting. As a rule of thumb I was told always use the thick. How much difference is there?

Re: V DETAIL FREG settings?!?

Vertical res reduction depends on the filtering tradeoffs, but simply add two lines together (like most interlaced cams do) reduces vertical res by about 50%

Re: V DETAIL FREG settings?!?

If i remember correctly, on the res chart, the lines merged at about 360 vertical lines in THICK mode.
They merged at about 480 with THIN and MID.
...but, again, MID had a certain amount of edge enhancement.
...and THIN had NO visible edge enhancement.

Hey Barry, do you know how do you do this in Avid systems?

Is thee any plug in?

thanks

I did my own test back in the summer . I used 24pn , letterbox and thin mode. when played back on my DVD player with a late 80's sony 27" I didn't notice any flickring BUT a month ago I filmed a Motorcycle Trial ,I tried 24pn ,letterbox and thin just to see what it would look like as I usually shoot bike events in 60i . The first thing I noticed right off was the flickering .Why now and not then , i have no idea but it is distracting to say the least . I think I'll try MID with letterbox and see what happens .
MY other conclusion is to stick to 60 i for motorcycle and car events , it looks so much nicer .
