UX90 zoom control problem

Excited about my new UX90 (replacing much loved HMC150). My old VariZoom controller didn't work well with the UX90 so I tried a friend's VZ-ROCK-PZF1 and it appeared to be OK. I got one. But after using all three I've found that behavior is highly inconsistent. It can be anywhere from acceptable or totally unresponsive. Jumpy. Difficult to control the point at which it activates. Or pretty good. In the end, unusable. I'm assuming this is an issue with the controller rather than the cam. Can anyone recommend a controller that works smoothly with this camera?
 
Follow up. More experiments. The PZF1 I bought was faulty. A replacement unit just arrived and it appears to work properly.
