GH4 UWA for GH4?

I have a new GH4 that I am using for architectural video work. currently using a panny 7-14mm, but it is quite prone to flare. I was thinking of replacing it with the oly 9-18mm, but the MFT version feels too small and plasticky to me. the B&H guy told me that the original 4/3 version of the oly 9-18mm was not compatible with the GH4. I want to maintain AF and autoexposure, so the metabones solution wont work for me. I cannot find any other alternatives for a UWA lens for the GH4. my favorite FL is 18mm equivalent. what would you suggest? thanks.

I believe you've set too many constraints and have run out of options. At such small focal lengths, I don't fully understand why AF is so important as you'll be at infinity in almost all scenarios, bar some wacky UWA close up photography. So I'm going to go any recommended MFT>Nikon G Speedbooster plus Tokina 11-16/2.8.

thanks timjim - I can live with manual focus, but I would like to keep autoexposure. how does the exposure work with metabones? I have read that having a manual aperture control on the adapter is not good., and I don't want to have to fiddle with aperture ring while I am panning, etc.

timjim - I am also a bit confused on conversion factors using UHD on GH4 and metabones. what equivalent FL's would the 11-16mm have using metabones and GH4?

Depends on what you want out of auto exposure. Most video guys wouldn't entertain auto exposure via the aperture as it is almost always stepped in DSLR world (i.e. visible jumps in exposure). It's different in stills world where you don't mind the aperture being set on a per shot basis. I don't see many advantages of AF/AE on wide angle shooting in video. For ENG/Docs I can see why some like the more videocamera style AF/AE, but I'd argue a video camera is better in this instance anyway.

Anyway, regarding equivalent FLs. The GH4 C4K crop (to FF) is 2.3x so MFT Speedbooster (0.71x) would yield a 1.633 crop (almost Canon APS-C). Tokina 11-16 is going to give 18 to 26mm.

FWIW, I'm going to soon be trying metabones NIKON MFT with the sigma 8-16mm.

This will be around 13mm at the wide end, and effectively f3.2-f4

Although my GH4 won't be here til tomorrow evening (I'm at the end of the UPS driver's route), I've been quite happy with the Oly m.Zuiko 9-18mm on both the GH3 and GX7. For focusing I use MF+ASSIST so focus is easy to see, and for video I never use auto exposure. And ND filters are easy to use on it.

Here's a good summary from B&H regarding WA's and the GH4, including Metabones/Nikon adapter conversion numbers for 4K formats:

BTW, I've been quite happy with the 7-14/GH3 combo. It has had some unusual purple flaring on the Oly E-M5 and I believe on the E-M1 also. ND Filters are the obvious problem, though with the fixed shade and dome front element.

FWIW, Olympus made a 4/3 mount 7-14/4 (no clue how it acts when mounted with the m43 -4/3 adapter).
They have also announced (but not yet produced) a m43-native 7-14/2.8 pro lens which might behave better (if you can wait for it)

Way back when I stepped up to a GH1 from an Oly E-30 4/3, w/ 9-18 (pretty good) and excellent 12-60, on the MA-1 4/3>m4/3 adapter I found the off-axis IQ clearly softer from the E-30's, only center as sharp, through f/8, and up to 18mm. My superb 4/3 Pana-leica 14-150 fortunately didn't suffer at all. Something to do with sensor micro-lenses and the increased rear element distance?? I haven't seen any references to this phenomenon since, though.

All wide angles have issues with flare - my 11-16 when I was shooting stills with the Nikon wasn't immune either.

For 18mm equivalent there with auto-aperture there're really only three choices, and you have the best among the three.

timjim - I am also a bit confused on conversion factors using UHD on GH4 and metabones. what equivalent FL's would the 11-16mm have using metabones and GH4?

A Metabones Speedbooster is a 1.4x reducer. 2x crop divided by 1.4 is also about 1.4 (square root of 2 is 1.42 etc, that's why you see the number 1.4 so often in photography). So, 15 to 22.

Wide end: 11 x 2.3 (GH4 4k crop) x 0.71 = ~18
long end: 16 x 2.3 x 0.71 = ~26

as to exposure, you should be able to run video in Aperture priority exposure mode if you can work with the shutter speed fluctuation, or instead lock shutter and aperture and allow it to go auto-ISO
