Using your laptop as a monitor with your Canon DSLR

Hard to tell but I believe it will give you a full HD resolution (just not 30fps). The EOS utility doesn't utilize the full window for the video so even when you maximize your screen on a 1280x800 laptop screen you are probably only getting 500 or 600 in height. I can see that its not limited to that resolution though when I manually stretch the window. I have to try on a monitor that is capable of higher resolutions.

One of the really nice features of the software, however, is that you can maginfy 5x or 10x and even that gets displayed on the computer (wether you maginify right on your camera or maginify right in hte software.) It actually pops up as a seperate window.

If you haven't tried this hookup I definitely recommend trying it..it will make you look at using this camera in a studio or controlled production environment in a whole different light.

I was just using this the other day during a corporate video shoot. The best part was having the laptop facing my client from the marketing firm and allowing them to both setup the background as well as monitor the script during the shoot. It was a huge asset and not one I could have had from a standard monitor.

Here's some BTS footage from the corporate shoot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aoZ4Bd7Uzo

so is it that easy?

i just use the softwere?

can i also control the start/stop for video shoot?

and to think i had it al the time:furious3:

awesome video. i will definitely have to use this in the future. does it work with a macbook pro? if so, may I ask what wires I would need to do it?

I hate this minidisplay port. :(

Would be great if you could turn your camera into a wireless device through your mini usb port. I've seen a product that allows devices with USB ports to become wireless but it's a little expensive.

That's the wireless usb thing that I found too. Was thinking you could get a mini usb to usb adaptor, but reading the acticle it states that "it can't do isosynchronous transfer modes. What that means is you can't stream video ie a web cam with this." So I guess that rules tht out. Hopefully more wireless USB products will come out soon. Cant find any othes out there yet.

Maybe now one can buy a cheap iPad and use it (apart from it's other functions) as an external monitor, instead of those IKAN, Manhattan, etc screen. Any clue guys?

doesnt the EOS tool have some bad lag? It does every time i use it (still useful, but not exactly a true monitor)

Agreed but until there is a workaround for outputting through HMDI while still having the onscreen display work, this is a pretty useful thing to know about for setting up video village.

i was wondering if it is possible to use a a 7D/5D for usb connection to the MBP then the HDMI connection from the 7D/5D to another 7 inch monitor that accepts HDMI input

will this combo work at the same time ?

could save money on a 2nd 7 inch screen and not need to use a HDMI spiltter box

But i guess the USB connection is very slow is that because the Canon cable is long and takes time for the info to Travel ?
