Using Vegas with DVCPRO50.

DVX Users,

Last summer, I shot a project using the Panasonic SDX-900, and recently (finally) have tried to load it to my Vegas NLE with a Panasonic deck via 6 pin firewire. I shot the footage using DVCPRO50, and 24p settings- but when I attempted to capture the footage in Vegas, all I got was a black screen- then, the whole pc shutdown. I tried again- same problem. I am wondering if Vegas accepts DVCPRO50? I used the 29.97 NTSC widescreen settings. Do any of you guys know what the problem could be?

Thanks-
Mike

Re: Using Vegas with DVCPRO50.

Supposedly, you can edit SD material on Vegas, as you can edit all the way up to HD if you wanted. However, I don't think an unsupported codec would cause the computer to shut down. You might have another problem with your hardware. What are your specs?

Re: Using Vegas with DVCPRO50.

Specs are: (or were at that time):

1.5 ghz
40 gb hard drive with external drive via firewire of 60 gb
32 mb graphics card
512 SDRAM

Ive since upgraded to:
120 gb external hard drive
256mb graphics card with dual dispay capability

When I tried to capture the DVCPRO50 footage, I made sure to store it in my external hard drive file, as I had the whole drive ready and available- still, it simply shut down the PC.
I was using the Panasonic SDJ-930 deck (I think that is the name...)

Re: Using Vegas with DVCPRO50.

The primary reason a computer spontaneously powers-down is most often due to a hardware problem (as opposed to a software problem). Most often, the culprit of the shutting down is the power supply.

I was having such a problem at the end of last year. At first, it only seemed to happen in a certain program (after effects). After some trouble shooting, I found that it wasn't a software problem. After isolating each of the hardware components and testing them, I narrowed it down to a stick of corrupted RAM, where the computer would shut down whenever the RAM was used intensly (which is the reason why it shut down while using AE).

Re: Using Vegas with DVCPRO50.

Thanks Jive! I think now that Ive enhanced some specs on the pc I will try it again. However, as an aside- its interesting to note that as far as I can tell, the image of the SDX-900 with its 4:2:2 does not appear that much different from the DVX-100 images-(both in 24p), and since I have to rent a deck at $350/day just to playback and load the footage from the DVCPRO50 cassetes, its really been a costly experiment- from now on Im sticking with plain old mini-dv! A lot easier to work with in post, and the 24p image delivers a lot for the low cost of post-production. I can always 'beef' up the signal to 4:2:2 in post, though I know it wont be as good if captured natively-I know the SDX-900 is obviously a better camcorder, but still- Im hoping the broadcast engineers at networks wont care as much- if the content, story, and editing is good- should still sell. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts-
I also wonder if I have to adjust any settings on the Panasonic deck? What do you think?
