Using the Nikon 28-70

I've been thinking about getting a Nikon Lens to use with my 5d2. I was thinking about getting the nikon 28-70 f/2.8.

- manual aperture control
- f/2.8
- good general focal range

Seems like a great all around lens for the camera in video mode. Anyone use this lens or have experience with it? I would love your input on it!
 
You know I was wondering the same thing. Although I am thinking about betting that canon will do manual control and go for canon own 24-70 2.8 as not to loose auto focus for stills.
 
My experience as a stills shooter does not like this lens

not quite wide enough
not quite fast enough
not quite long enough

but 2.8 although less appealing than 2 or 1.2 is safer for manual focus

and with movies you can can width by panning so maya good choice

Not long enough, not fast enough? it's a 2.8 28-70 fullframe zoom! You can't get much better than that maybe say red's 18-85 zoom lens
 
What I am saying is that if say you own a 20mm, 50mm prime an 85 prime (all cheap) then the 28-70 becomes dead weight in your case

28 is not really wide for 'awesome vistas' and 70 isnt really an isolating tele lens and in the middle it doesnt have the bokeh of a 50 1.4 or 2.0 wide open- so it kind of does everything badly IMO

I would only want a zoom that was so good that I could leave my primes at home

The 18-85 zoom is for a smaller recording chip is it not - agiain 18 on a smaller chip does not give a vista look

Well I have regular nikor 20.2.8, 50 1.4, 55 2.8 macro 50 1.2 and an 85 F2 manual

the 85 and 55 and 1.2 are ancient the others are current ish AF

The only thing that really seems to matter is a smooth focus barrell and no wobble in the front element

I wish I could be a one lens man - maybe you should try it - less faffing trouble is you lose..

50mm bokeh
55 close focus
20 ultra wide
85 - well that doesnt have much going for it IMO

Check out the minimum focus on the zoom too -might be a bit poor


Im basically digging 20mm 50mm and 70-200 at the mo

that will probably change next week, cos Im really trying to have one set or AF glass for my D3 and one MF for the 5d - which ill adapter up over time

I have two novoflex adapters right now - work fine but a bit pricey - ill try a cheapee soon
