using the new iPad as an external monitor

Ha Ha bet that heading got your attention didn't it? And for only $499 for the 16Gig version that's cheap for a HD external monitor for your movie camera.....

Image using this High Res iPad as a monitor. It boasts a 10 hour battery and it uses the high-resolution, 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display.......

Well anyways Can it be done? Can it be updated to steam video into the iPad and use as a monitor for focus assist and monitoring on the DSLR and HVX/DVX and so on?

The iPad has awesome resolution and I have also noticed it can be used to steam video out onto a TV or external monitor.

But can you steam using the Apple composite AV cable in?

maybe if the next ipad gets the same type of resolution as the the iphone 4, it could be a very awesome choice.

I have an iPhone 3G. I looked at my step-son's iPad. Wasn't impressed with the resolution. I'll reconsider when they have the iPhone 4 resolution.

Regards,

Dan.

p.s., I'm getting an iPhone 4 to replace my 3G.

Don't know, but it was infinitely stupid of them to not even make the screen 16:9 in this day and age.

I bet they've considered it but I guess it seems more convenient to have a standard paper formatted device in your hands. 16:9 would've been kinda strange.

Look at this, it's ridiculous

iPad - 1024 by 768

How is the iPad less hi-res? Do you mean pixels per inch?

I dunno. A 16:9 screen on the iPad would most likely have been a 1024x576 - I take the black borders any day over that. It also means subtitles and player controllers can be outside of the image.

I'm seriously miffed of the lack of mid-priced 1920x1200 computer monitors now, it's only 1920x1080 which means I can't have the timeline below the image when editing.

Amen, brother! Count me in as another vote in favor of HD video lettered-boxed on 4:3 screens. As Martti says, it's the UI (control panels), stupid. But I suppose that train has all but completely left the station ... :-)

It's comical to me that even the latest version of FCP on a 1920x1080 monitor doesn't seem to be able to display full HD video in its preview/program (Viewer/Canvas) windows side-by-side with each @ exactly 50% zoom mode w/o scroll bars. Instead, together these windows are several pixels wider than 1920. Might be an easy thing for Apple to change (they can allow a user pref to display these windows w/o scroll bars, etc.), but they've never bothered. I know I'm not the only one annoyed by this quirk.

But back on topic: I expect we'll be able to wirelessly view "HD" flavored video from a variety of sources on iPad type thingees as a matter of course soon enough. My guess is WiFi "HD" video out will be a standard feature of most cams announced by later this year & onward. As cool as that is, I semi-dread the thought (wireless copy protection issues, incompatibilities, signal drop-outs, yet more compression loveliness, etc.)
