Using the HVX "Portrait" style

Apart from the OIS probably not working, can anyone think of a reason not to use the HVX on its side?

I'm think of doing a stylized short/experimental on a green screen shooting in 720p but with the camera on its side. I'll then comp the material into a 1920x1080 sq px project.

Thoughts anyone?

For green screen you are better off shooting in 1080 anyway. Then apart from your subject being on their side when played back in post I dont see why it wouldn't work.

There is a risk of injury.

Especially when you turn a 200-pound TV on its side to show the work you've done...

:-)

I've actually been noticing this being used in public displays at locations such as malls, etc. In fact, there is a market for stock shots like this.

I would guess some of the common subjects would be waterfalls, coconut trees, skyscrapers, etc.

As long as your NLE will allow you to do a 90 degree rotation (as opposed to be constrained to 180 degree moves) you shouldn't have any problem importing the footage into a conventional project assuming that is what you want to do. If all you want to do is shoot and display rotated 90, then your good to go.

This is an interesting idea, and brings us a new format --- tallscreen.
That would be perfect for a new King Kong movie, as he climbs the Empire State Building :)

That is a common technique for shooting FX elements to get maximum resolution.

Yes, this was the general idea, to get more resolution.

Thanks for all you comments.

Yes as long as you don't need the composition to be 16x9.... for green screen purposes, the portrait shooting will give a great advantage with resolution and keying. I've heard of people using this method for years. It yields good results.
