Using RCA Inputs ????

Hi
I am recording a music video tommorow and want to take a lineout from the CD player that will be playing the music to the band and performers and run it straight into my DVX100 so it is synced with the video. However, it seems like I can only use the Audio RCA inputs in VCR mode and not in camera mode. Is there anyway around this, otherwise I may have to make an RCA to XLR cord to go into the mic inputs. Has anyone ever been able to use the RCA inputs in Camera mode?? Thanks

You can make an RCA > XLR converter very easily. The wiring configuration is as follows:

RCA Tip to Pin 2 of the XLR
RCA Sleeve to Pin 1 and Pin 3 of the XLR

Set the camera to "Line" mode.

Keep the peak levels at a point below clipping, 3 to 6 dB of headroom above the absolute peak will give you the best S/N ratios and avoid clipping.

Why not just sync it in post? You're going to have a lot more than one take, right? In that case you're going to have to re-sync in post anyway. Just start each take with a hand "clap", and use that to sync them all together later.

Or am I missing something here? (I may be)

Have a loud speaker set

Have a loud speaker set

I recommend having the CD in a loud boombox or speakers. Make sure it is loud enough so the band can hear it but soft enough so they can sing play along. Then just jill the audio in post and replace with the song. It helps if you have the song seperated into several seperate tracks (20 Seconds Each) when you are at your location, so you can quickly navigate through the song and set up multiple shots/takes. But if you do that, make sure there is no delay on your CD player between tacks. The best method is playing off a laptop so there is no possible delay between tracks. Make sure you singer is pretty articulate in his mouth movements when he sings. It helps eliminate the "pasted song" feeling.

My thoughts,
Michael
