Using Raylight for 1080 24pa before Avid

About to film the final scenes tonight for a short film titled "Samaritan". I did everything in 1080/24pa, and now need to use Raylight to make true 24p files.

Has anyone done this already? Just wondering if it is fast or takes a while to do, workflow, etc.
thanks,

Eric

If I understand what you're doing correctly, you edited in a 29.97 timeline, right? And now you want to convert to 24p?

If that's right, you'll be attempting to do a reverse telecine on already-edited footage; you may not be satisfied with the results you get. And having edited 24pA material in a 29.97 environment, it might actually make things worse.

I know it's too late now, but the time to make the true 24p files was before editing. Just something to keep in mind for the future. :)

avid also has a advanced pulldown removal option. you could have just turned it on before you started your edit...

I still cant get this to work. I had to purchase MXFX to get a proper pull down removal for Avid. but once I try to bring the clips into Avid, they start to steal each others names and identity's and I am left with only about half of my clips. I think it is a problem with the DV film software MXFX - because when I bring the clips into Avid there is serious problems, and when using the media tool I can analyze the clips, and several freeze half way through the clip and are stuck on 1 single frame for another 30 - 45 seconds longer.

xmephestox: I haven't started my edit yet, because of all these problems with the pull down removal. Is there a setting I can use before I start this edit?

i haven't tested it and from what i'm reading it probably won't work, i've only seen the option, under clips, modify, you can modify the pulldown. as of now raylight is the only option. i'm reading media composer 3.0 might be able to do it natively now, but dunno if u can swing that...

yeah Avid just sent me media composer 3.0.5 so Im about to try it and see if I can get this to work.

I can't say anything good about the raylight software.

good to have an honest review on raylight right now, i tried calling avid, the tech guy was saying there is no native support for 1080i/24pa, but hopefully he was just a moron and there is something you can do. if you get it working let me know, i'm very interested in shooting in this format in these next couple months and with your review of raylight... i'm not sure how i'm gonna do it with avid now.

DON'T DO IT! I have been planning a movie release party for this film on Oct 31, and now I can't get the files to work. If it doesn't work - its not worth it.

I'm installing media composer right now, but its gotta be a problem with raylight, basically when Import multiple raylight cards the metadata is screwed and clips start to take other clips identities.

I can edit the footage in a 59.97 timeline, but every output ive tried looks horrible

there is always fcp. u can get it to work with that a lot easier. now im actually worried about my upcoming film. i want to shoot 1080p but want to cut in avid. this is a killer

Ok so it will work with FCP? Do you know what the workflow is? If this doesnt work with media composer than im gonna shoot over to the Mac store and get a G5 and final cut. Do you know the workflow?

there is that, sounds like a headache. and yes ppl have been doing it w/ FCP fairly easily for a bit now. most ppl use cinema tools to take off the pulldown. you can also try a test on your import settings to take off pulldown, it should be a preference in ur log and transfer window or in your easy setup.

try that as a referance.

and i just opened up fcp, under log and transfer there is a little button w/ a gear on it on the top right corner to the left of the display screen. click that, preferences, and click REMOVE PULLDOWN AND DUPPLICATE FRAMES.

that should ingest your footage right nice. just a tip if you wanna stay on your pc, premiere cs4 might be a cheaper option than fcp and a new g5. u can email adobe and ask them if they have native support for it, i hear cs4 supports ... everything. GOOD LUCK and tell me how it all goes man.

well basically Avid's response is that it is not supported yet in Xpress Pro and Media Composer.

DVfilm makes a file that Avid Media composer cannot read, yet both software companies think there stuff works lol.

I figured out a workflow for now, start a new project for each card, import P2 clips to bin, mark in and out points on a clip and place on timeline. Video and Audio mixdown the clip into a separate bin. New mixdown clips will work together.

are you still using raylight to convert each p2 card and then mixing each clip down to prevent the file name issue?

yeah Im removing pull down in MXFX to get the footage "into Avid" and then I am individually mixing each clip to be able to "edit in Avid". But I must say the quality looks pretty sweet to be working in 1080/23.94 natively.

The mixdown isn't too bad either, except that it seperates the video and the audio - which will add more work when I edit, but all in all takes about 28 hours to mixdown my clips - which beats 150 hours of troubleshooting with dvfilm and avid.

An Avid rep is going to be in cleveland tomorrow and requested to take a look at my converted P2 card footage, which is commendable, much better Avid support than in the past.

Do the clips for video and audio have the same START timecode? If so, do an AutoSync, not a mixdown.

Michael

Thanks for the info Michael. I couldnt get anything to work besides the video mixdown. Neither could Avid or DV film. Luckily once I mixed down all the clips, the edit went extremely fast and I am already completed.

Raylight worked perfect for me.

HVX shot at 1080i 24PA.
Opened the P2 card with RaylightMXFX and had it remove advanced pulldown (2.3.3.2).
Created a 1080p 23 project in avid and import the p2 contents and edited away.

Work fine first time.
